From what I have gleaned from conversation and supposition in this very discord, Non Kickstarter Mythic Pets are a " late game" thing. Kickstarter Mythic Pets are obtainable from the beginning by the Kickstarter Backers that backed at appropriate tiers or got the add on. There is a chance I was mistaken but I believe the Kickstarter Pets were Marketed as exclusive, which is a major part of why I got it.
As a Kickstarter backer, I would however accept separate colored skins of the same models available to non backers. Assuming each character can only have one pet, that would mean the option to pick the alternate non kickstarter variety would have to also be available for kickstarter backers from the beginning.
If you want the one way to NOT handle it, there is no further example than Riot Games League of Legends. Way way back Riot released skins exclusive to beta players and purchasable exclusive skins available for limited time. Years down the lion, Riot decided to make all those exclusive skins obtainable by everyone else while keeping certain skins limited to certain events. This caused legal issues of course, but because Riot had !@#$ you money, they went through with it. As a result, Riot was never able to sell future exclusive skins as well because of the proven behavior of reneging on their advertisements. So that is why Riot switched to other strategies to sell their skins.
Nowadays they sell prestige skins that are available during certain events and are mostly reobtainable a year or so later when they get added to the Mythicc pool except for a certain Ahri skin that is somehow kept exclusive. Eventually they will have to make it obtainable because of the number of Ahri Fans, Stans, and Players.
Most games will never get anywhere near as large as Riot, which means they are more vulnerable to bad PR. CI deciding to make exclusive content non exclusive at launch will hurt their sales because such a decision will create angry consumers not just disaffected.
Now some very disingenuous people during the Riot Fiasco tried to claim the beta players or the first people that bought exclusive skins when the opportunity was available are just being selfish. But the thing is, those skins were advertised as being exclusive to the conditions they were available. Meaning the intent for the product was those specific skins would never be available to purchase or obtain again.
