There are multiple areas in my farming plot of land where I cannot clear the grass away, is this normal or is this a bug of some kind?

Yeah its a known bug it has been fixed but will be included on the 1.0 version

You need to reload the game or go back to the main menu. After you enter the game again the grass should be Dissapeared
