I unlocked the dig site fully but there are no stairs. Am I missing a way to get down to the dirt? I have seen other pictures of stairs located in the middle. I am at Rank B, first winter, completed the dig site unlock alter.

the general area is extension of the mid forest iirc, which unlocks differently
