tree planting festival

So I'm not sure if this is normal but in my fourth year of attending the tree festival, and competing the event as usual (no bugs etc). The next in game day npcs were saying it was sad that the event was canceled?

I know I attended the festival because I got a fruit tree from it as a reward so I'm at a loss here. Was this a bug?

Oh, directly after the event when I was still like in the event area, Mr. Mayor told me "Too bad it's been cancelled."

I had assumed it was one of those dialogue glitches other folks mentioned. :0c
