My wired controller is always plugged in but I want to play this game with mouse and keyboard. All of the tooltips and prompts are for the controller and I can’t see the mouse and keyboard hints.

Only way I’ve found to do so is unplug controller while steam is completely shut down, then I can open steam & launch game & it sticks to KBM

i personally prefer to play coral island with a mix of kbm and controller and maybe what i'm doing would help you;
if you go to coral island in your steam library, while a controller is plugged in, underneath the play button there are several options including "controller layout"
if you open this window, you can set your controller to an emulated keyboard and mouse (since you don't plan to actually use it there's probably no need to adjust the automatic version)
if you have this set, opening the game with a controller will preserve keyboard function

I don't really understand this at all, sorry. I unplugged my controller completely, restarted Steam, and the game is still showing me controller prompts by default. It is actually visually "flickering" briefly from Controller to KBM mode every time I press a button on my keyboard. Like all of the buttons show up as controll (Green A for example) but when I mouse click, the A changes to the little right click mouse button and then back to the green A
The game is basically unplayable for me and I'm not happy.
HALLELUJAH. I went into Steam, Coral Island Page, then used the Settings cog and chose "Controller." Then I said "Disable Steam Input"

if you follow my steps and apply the layout it does work, i'm 100% sure since i use it and have since last year

No, I tried both methods. I didn’t understand your instructions because it was asking me to map keys to the controller and I didn’t want to fuss with that. I wanted an easy solution to just disable controller completely.
I didn’t want to make a controller layout which is what your instructions were asking me to do. Maybe it looked different for me because I had unplugged my controller already.
When I had the game on Gamepass it let me play with just keyboard, probably because it wasn’t trying to use that steam controller thing!
Anyway hopefully now it is smoother sailing. Hopefully in the final game version you will be able to clearly choose which setup you want

the other persons suggestion didn't work so i just wanted to offer you something i do that i know works :(
it automatically sets a default kbm layout, it's not really a fuss..
i'm happy you found a solution for your exact problem but i don't want people who come searching for how to do this to think it's not possible because you didn't want to actually do what i said

sorry your instructions were confusing, and not really applicable since i'd already unplugged the controller! like i said maybe if i had still had it plugged in i would have seen something different
