Trying to level up Combat

I’m in year 3 of my farm, go to the mines regularly and STILL struggling with combat level. I’ve maxed out all the others but I’m still only on level 4 of combat! I even slowed down my day so I could spend so much more time in the mines fighting the monsters and my level didn’t budge the next day when I woke up! Help! Is there any specifics to level up better? I know with foraging, cutting trees is worth more towards your forage level - so would I gain more towards combat if I was using traps etc?

It will be easier to level with upcoming update if you want to wait.

Otherwise, use rope/bombs to go through as many floors as possible and fight everything you encounter is all you can really do
