i downloaded the game from xbox game pass to try it, and i really like it so far. i want to buy it on steam, but i don't want to lose my progress. is there any way to transfer the save data?

Yeah but I wouldn’t. Most people have their files end up corrupted and then they lost everything.
Especially because right now game pass is roughly 6 versions behind steam. Buy it and start fresh when the update drops. A lot is changing in this update.

i think it varies. i know a lot of people i talk with all the time are starting over.
steam is 100% worth it because we always get the hot fix
game pass gets max 4 before microsoft stops pushing them and then you just get left behind as the team fixes bugs.
i've put 700 hours in and i'm restarting this update for many reasons
so take my opinion however you want here- i 100000% think steam is worth it and i also think it is worth waiting to start on steam until the update comes out and start a new file. the game feels/plays a little different and it'll be less of shock with some of the nerfs that way.
- there's new early mine rewards justifying waiting because you won't get them unless you do not open the mine chests
- there's price nerfs meaning how you play now in .4 will most likely change in .5
but those same reasons can be used to justify starting now so you dont have to deal with it
so it really all depends. on what you want out of the game. you'll be able to trigger all cutscenes and new stuff no matter if you start a steam save now or if you want and trigger them in a brand new save
early game is changing with the hot springs being buffed slightly
late game has a lot of stuff not in game but a lot of it is and
there is now less of a sense of rush with the .5 vs .4

regardless of what you decide to do- it is very worth being on steam simply for the bug fixes 😄
