I know we have new weapon options in the game, but how do we actually get the weapons when we're only given a sword?

Go to the BOS hideout and you can buy weapons there

is that the cabin where she lives or is it somehwere else that I haven't found yet? The house down and to the left of th emine? Sout West I think?

Kira’s house is left of the ranch. There’s a round green door, that’s the way to the BOS hideout. Shop might be dependent on being a member. To get that invite it’s level 10 or 15 of earth mine to unlock the letter and then defeat 30 monsters once the quest is active.
