#Does the flying insect trap work different than the ground insect trap?

I've placed a bunch of them in a few locations now, I never use scent for any of them, but while the ground traps catch something almost every time, most flying traps haven't caught a single thing yet. Is there any difference between how they work? Or is there something else that could cause that?

no- they work the same- highly recommend scents though as it's something daily vs a small chance

then I wonder why the ground traps are consistently outperforming flying traps

#

do you happen to know if catch rates are related to bug rarity?

mortal pewter

honestly not sure- are they super close together?

all equally close (I placed a few of them together in a grid in a couple of spots)

what i did in beta with my ground traps (but didnt have a chance to test with the flying as well) was I placed traps in an area when i saw the rare bug i wanted (tiger beetle) was currently spawned there

placed 4, caught a tiger & a black widow

I was thinking, because I placed most in the western forest, perhaps the fact that the only available flying bugs are legendaries, that could explain the difference

that's very possible- i didn't have the traps in the same area-i'd put ground in one and flying in another and had no issues

gonna craft a whole bunch of them as soon as I have enough honey and place them all over the island

#

we'll see what happens then

Some testing makes me suspect traps can’t catch legendary bugs/traps without scent can’t catch legendary bugs. Any chance someone can confirm or deny?

nvm they can but it seems really rare

Wait, is there a specific scent/bait for the flying traps? It didn't make sense to use the ground insect bait? Now I'm unsure

I have a flying trap and a ground trap close together near the inn. The flying one only seems to catch bugs if I have a scent attached to it. The ground one will catch with or without scent. I’ll monitor it next time I play to see the differences.

I apparently haven't unlocked the scent for flying insects yet, but I placed a flying trap without scent in the part of the western forest beyond the pink flower walls, and it caught a silver star Atlas moth overnight. Not sure what rarity that is. Not sure if I had really great luck, or what?

The traps seem to be a really good way to catch rare and legendary bugs, even without scent. When I put 10 on the beach I always catch a few tarantulas. No luck catching crowned hairstreak butterflies though, not sure why I can't catch those even though they are the only flying option in the season, but tarantula is one of many and I catch it easily. + I did consistently catch blue morphos there

@buoyant surge I caught a Crowned Hairstreak. I put 3 out in the "mid" forest area all near the large, cracked open log (with mushrooms in it). I've caught 2 so far and one Morpho in that spot.

Oh and also i used scent on them constantly so that might have helped too
