#Blacksmith coffer

I am brand new. I can't get the blacksmith to open the coffers. I try to place them on the anvil, but they won't stay. Is that just the game so far or should I do something?

Is your inventory full? It just doesn't work for me if I don't have an open inventory slot (in addition to the slot the coffer was in).
