How do you level? I chat with people daily and I’m not sure how gift giving works but it doesn’t seems to do anything if you don’t get lucky and give them something they like.

Give them gifts they like and talk. That’s it really. The heart level is currently maxed at 5. The wiki has lists of all loved, liked and hated gifts for each characters. It also saves that info for you in the character page, so you can check there in game too

The other way to find out, there are torn pages that give hints and some character dialogue from the person themselves or sometimes other people will let you know liked and loved items. You can read torn pages in journal under the notes submenu
