So I saw that the upgrades are meant to be wood and copper but now I need hardwood stone and fibre. Has the requirements changed? Is there even a way to collect hardwood? Help please.

You can buy it in the carpenter shop, that's the only place I've seen it so far unless it was a random chance from any of the coffers.

Hi, you can also get hardwood when you chop down a mature tree (one you can shake).
When you've levelled up your foraging mastery and have skill points to spend, you can increase the chance for trees to drop hardwood when you chop them down. It's a Tier 1 skill 'Exceptional Cutter'.
Oh and occasionally I've had some when diving and clearing trash!
To buy the coop and barn initially still takes wood, stone, bronze bars, fiber and cash. It's only when you want to upgrade those buildings to level 2 that you'll need hardwood, stone, fiber and cash.

I only get 1 hardwood in 20 trees. In saying that I only have 2 and I’m sure I chopped more. I’ve maxed out all the skills I could with this beta version.

You can use dynamite on the large fallen logs on your farm. Those give hardwood.
