How do I get a higher star koi fish? I keep getting base level koi and sometimes I get other higher quality fish but I’m not sure what’s dictating when it’s higher quality or not. Is it bait? Or town ranking? Thanks!

I've been trying for ages, too, and keep asking. Anecdotes include: Using bait, eating food that gives a fishing buff (like fish tacos), and just keeping at it. Make sure you have the best fishing pole, too.

Sheer luck. In my first save, it took me 23 mornings in a row before I caught a silver one. In the current save, I caught it on Spring 11.

I got silver koi on the 12th day of spring at around noon. I tried pretty much every morning of spring at the cavern.

Cleaning the ocean helps to increase the quality of fish plus there is a skill in the fishing tree

I think I got the koi at the temple lake. I got the regular then I got the bronze and then after many more attempts I got silver. I still haven’t got the Asian sheepshead 😔

I would suggest to try to catch it inside the cavern.
You can use the bait and have the highest level fishing rod and also the fishing perks to give you a better change but it is still based on RNG.

For me it took like 20 in game days (i was fishing every morning) before i finally got it.

Where should I be looking to find koi fish?

The water in the cavern entrance or the goddess lake. I always have more luck in the cavern entrance.

In the morning or afternoon, during spring and summer.
Apparently you can get it in the river town too but I haven’t seen one there yet.

check the trash cans for catfish, i found lot of them in it and for the koi, i think i find mine in the cave entrance. you don’t necessarily need to use bait, but definitely upgrade your rod because it helps with fishing. and cleaning the ocean helps with the quality of the fishes you get

How does one use bait with the rods?

it’s in your backpack. you take your bait and put it on the symbol at the bottom of your screen. it’s a hook (?) if i remember correctly, right next to the flower and above the two spots for the rings.

Could be wrong, but rod and bait don't seem to have anything to do with it. It's all connected to the ocean. Clearing the full thing almost seems to guarantee osmium (with a couple gold here and there). Focus the ocean.

yeah, definitely. cleaning the ocean helps with quality, but upgrading your rod and using bait can help to get rarer (not sure it’s a word?) fishes easier

Thank you for letting me know that clearing the ocean helps out with getting higher quality fishes. I’m having a hard time catching a silver koi too

Quality of fish seemed to be connected to ocean quality. At the beginning i got low quality but after cleaning the ocean i got mostly gold and osmium fish. There is also a skill in the fishing skill tree that increases chances of high quality fish.

I think bait and fishing rod material only influence fish frequency, catch difficulty and stamina consumption.

well you have to wait for next year. it’s kind of sucks but it’s not the end of the world. you can do others bundles at the same time. but if you want to get more chance to catch a silver koi, focus on cleaning the ocean for a couple of days (you don’t have to finish the entire ocean, just maybe until 20m? or 40m if you already cleaning the entire 20m area). and when your cleaning is done, focus on catching the koi

I've vastly improved my luck fishing - including getting the silver koi (again :-) - by eating food that improves fishing ability.

if you have the kitchen already, you can cook fish food yourself (i think sushi only required fish + the knife and it improves fishing ability if i remember correctly)

Not sure if I misunderstood, but you said you get base level and sometimes other higher levels, just not silver. If it's for the altar and you need a silver, anything silver and above will work. So if you get gold ones, you can offer those.

but I think I have enough bronze ore to make bars for expanding to obtain the kitchen
