I had to buy it. However I did notice that if you have a silver pickaxe you can mine the giant meteorite by the Lake Temple. That should give you I think 20 gold ore. I can't remember. It is not right by the Lake Temple it is blocking a set of stairs that is right before the Lake Temple. At the top of the map.
