Help!
#I never got the brush to find fossils, is there anything I can do to get it without restarting?

The brush isn't an item, did you check the character menu? Bring up the inventory and switch to the menu on the far left
I don't have the game in front of me so I can't give real specific instructions but you should find it there somewhere
It basically just "modifies" your hoe so you can find torn pages, and then fossils when they actually implement that mechanic

You get the brush when you get the 50 items in the museum and finish the whole pickstarter quest. Then you're rewarded with the brush (which is not an item like our friend just said).
In your journal, on "player" tab, you find what specials you've unlocked so far. Brush is the last one on my picture.
If you have finished the pickstarter quest (extended museum), and got the dialogue with NPC giving you the brush, but do not find this icon on your specials list, then you're experiencing an issue.
Overwise, you'll find fossils by digging clovers, no new item needed
