you collect the fodder inside the barn or coop
so just place the fiber inside the mill and collect inside

Ok, it didn't seem to even want to take the fiber, maybe I had my fodder trays full

it would show a number when you interact with it - 150/150 (that's with silo, without it's either 50 or 100)
That's when you storage is full and mill can't process more.
When not - it will show, f.e., 100/150.
first number in that is how much you have, and second - storage capacity.

Ok. I now have a silo and it says it has stuff stored but my animals fodder bins are not full.

The bins in the barn and coop looks empty but you can still get hay out as long as you have some stored. As for feeding your animals - you do have to put hay down into slots manually. Right now silo only gives you more storage capacity, nothing else. Yes, it's not SDV.
