blow logs on farm with bombs or buy from carpenter. logs may be chopped with gold+ axe, but bombs easier

also i think there is a skill upgrade that will give you a chnace to gain hardwood by logging trees but buying is teh easiest way at the beginning

there is a skill, but it doesn't work - carpenter is the only reliable source right now

It does - but very random, and very rare. I've got maybe 5 or so hardwood from clearing EVERY. SINGLE. TREE. on the farm and in the forest/vineyard (so pretty much all you can cut down). Got over 2 stacks of regular wood in the process. And now I'm thinking I was, actually, lucky.

Anyway - logs give 6-10 hardwood each, and it's more than enough for now, since it's not used in anything but tools upgrades at the moment.

I've gotten hardwood when clearing trash while diving, but also very rare.
