I just started playing and can't figure it out. It feels like they should be harvestable or removable, but how?

If you hit them with your hoe it will give you different things like wild seeds, sand, etc

Sweet, thanks! I was trying to not use that outside of the actual farmable area since it seemed to change the terrain, but it seems like the squares where you can plant things will disappear if nothing is planted.

If you hit the ground with your hoe and then hit it again with your pickaxe it will change the square back to normal ground😊
