Hello! I've been wanting to decorate my farm, but after clearing portions of it, I can't seem to put items down where I'd like. For example, I want a fence around the edge, but I can only put it around some of the edge - the rest of the time it just shows a red square where I'm unable to do so. It seems pretty random where I can put things down or not. Is there something I need to do to the ground first, other than clearing it of trees, rocks, etc?

I have the same issue! Even if the ground is clear.

I've had that happen and I usually just either wiggle the reticule around a bit or relocate my character directly in front of where I want to place the item and that usually fixes it.

If your character is not close enough to the spot, or too close, you'll get a red square, and a message that you can't place that here (or something like that). Try moving your person a little closer, but not too close. I can do a line of five fence (two each way & one next to) near my character.
