getting wood from trees, do they respawn in the forest ever?

ive been trying to get wood by using the trees available in the forest a little, thinking it would respawn once the day starts again and this hasnt happened for a week in game, is this normal or do they ever come back? eventually will this mechanic work? bc i dont always have the money to buy wood or the space to keep replanting trees if that makes sense
