Is there any festivals we can actively participate in right now? I have not been able to do anything during the potluck or tree planting

Tree planting will not be implemented until the big Spring-themed update.

You can play a minigame at the cherry blossom festival, but yes, the potluck portion is disabled.

The beach cleanup festival in summer has some working minigames.

ooo okay! just wanted to make sure i was not missing out :) trying to experience all i can in my first farm year!

I'm sooo glad someone mentioned this, I think they should maybe remove the mailbox telling us there is a festival because I wasted hours of an in game day just sitting by the people for the tree festival and nothing was happening xDDD I also missed the cherry blossom fesitival because I was in the area, but it never started.

Oh, you don't just wait. You have to manually start the festivals, even the ones that are working. There will be an interactable item to click on for the Potluck and for the Beach Cleanup. IIRC the potluck one looks like a box with a balloon on it
