Will multiplayer be a completely and different story experience from single player or an extension? I'm asking as my husband and I had backed the kickstarter for 2 copies so that we can play multiplayer together when it becomes available (I know it's still a ways off). For perspective, My Time At Sandrock has a separate story and questline (and play experience) on a different map instance in MP vs. SP so playing in SP has no impact on the MP experience. Is this how Coral Island is anticipated to be at some point? Or only minimal multiplayer experience (just visiting each other's islands basically in single player experience).

What we know about multiplayer: The first type to become available will be the ability to visit a friend's island. Later, they will add the ability to start a dedicated multiplayer farm. We've been told nothing about how that will impact the story (or much of anything else - multiplayer is very early in development right now).
I believe we do also know that it will be a 'host' and up to three 'guests' - i.e., the game is reliant on the same host player being available for all games, and it will only be saved to that player; it can't be saved across computers.
