one issue with it for example
once per turn means once per your turn
they dont specify its your turn on the card
just in the book
There's another game I have that has something like that in it...
oh, it's Dark Moon. you're supposed to attempt to repair the shields after specific actions, but the rules don't say that and there's no clear indication in the rules of how you actually complete a "repair shields" action.
that info is spelled out in a forum post by one of the creators on BoardGameGeek lol
My local gameshop opened again this week, passed by yesterday and brought back new dice
it's cool to buy from them again instead of online, that shop is old, one of the only few left at that š„ŗ
they got trays full of each different die that you can buy by fistfull y'all
Have any of y'all seen the Adventure Zone?
TAZ is good but they also cursed themselves by making the first campaign impossible to live up to lol
is anyone here like interested in joining a small dnd campaign, its got space fantasy and of course space lesbians.
@ me if you are
I would if I wasnāt DMing a huge campaign and playing two other big campaigns
I love TAZ (the first two seasons at least) and I have the Bureau of Balance board game
Sovereign Chess
Balance was such an insanely good campaign. I liked Amnesty, though not quite as much and fell off of Graduation early, though mostly cuz my drive to work suddenly got very short and I didn't wanna listen to podcasts for 10 minutes at a time
I have literally been crying for a day straight over amnesty episode 28
oof alright well the offers out to anyone
I've listened to Balance and Amnesty, but I dropped Graduation at ep 10.
I honestly got as far as I did in Graduation because I really liked Justin's character
My wife ran a game similar to Graduation years ago and let us pick our classes and ran those sessions but she basically ran every class that didn't have all the characters very quickly with one specific thing for the character in class to learn/pick up on
Iām not bothering with Grad
And she advanced a larger plot constantly so everyone was involved. The climax was my character leaping off an escape wagon to go brawl an eldritch abomination because a) my character was a dumb meathead; b) it was rad as heck
I would love to say yes but I think i've just hit my limit for campaigns š how often would you be playing?
I tried to listen to Grad but it just... it missed out on the fun group times i loved
Also I had a duel with another PC who was also a fight crazed lunatic and kept blocking my punches with her school bag, which contained a large side of ham
And at the end, my wife ruled that the bag had been punched so much, the ham liquified. This resulted in the two PCs sitting down to bond over what an awesome duel it was while drinking a "ham smoothie" directly out of the bookbag
Ned Chicane was wonderful
I am gonna take a break from amnesty because episode 28 was too much
āYou see the stars, and they are beautiful. And then theyāre gone.ā
I think, while I like Amnesty, it and Graduation suffer the same flaw. Balance worked because it started out a little goofy and then builds into this massive story and you grow to love the characters over a long time. The other two try to hit that same note out of the gate which leaves them feeling...I dunno. Again, I like the content so that's not meant to be nasty or anything, just kind of a criticism.
I think they'd be better if the characters were given a bit more time to breathe or something. I would still 100% recommend them to people though cuz the family has such a great dynamic and I love listening to their shenanigans
Nah grads problem was railroading
@coarse cobalt once a week or eveey other week ideally
Also I wish they'd have used the superhero one off their dad ran cuz the twist at the end was fantastic. Though I understand that FATE is not a very...engaging system for listeners since there isn't much mechanically going on which can turn it more into an audio drama rather than real play
Dust was also excellent
The bit with Griffin ringing the bell then all the NPCs giving him a hard time about it had me laughing so hard I thought I was gonna wreck my car
Thatās why I donāt listen while driving
The darker atmosphere still allowed for good humor
If you're looking for a superhero TTRPG podcast, I highly recommend Protean City Comics
I have a horror story from a hero themed game so I tend to avoid em
I...don't think I've played a hero themed game but I have used a system for superhero games. That was the worst game I've ever played in cuz the GM just...wouldn't wrangle people and we spent literal weeks of sessions just aimlessly wandering a large space cruiser talking to people with no story advancement lol
I had a gm who sent me a tin of abusive chat when the campaign didn't go their way.
That's lame
I don't think any campaign ever goes the way the DM "wants" it to go but that's why they shouldn't block out more than sorta like...the gist of what's going to happen
I always ran bits of a game as "they start here, their goal is to get there, here's a few things they might bump into along the way, and the rest of it is for them to fill in"
One example is my character is a reformed villain who was brainwashed into working for the hero's. They know what situation they're in but can't break out because any plans of turning against the hero's are erased from their mind. The GM wanted them to have an arc where they developed a dad kid relationship with hero that captured them but they very hostile and terrified of him.
When they pushed back I got chewed out about how in previous campaigns I've allowed people's PC's to become my characters' found family so why was this different.
trying again since conversations dipped if anyones interested in a fantasy space dnd campaign let me know you can @ me or message me, its once a week/every other week and it happens on the weekend
Is it a text based, voice based or video based game? What's the starting level? Any restricted race or classes? Any character creation rules?
voice based, level 3, homebrew classes would have to be run by the dm the races are standard dnd races but itd be better to figure that out joining the server same with character creation rules
are you interested?
What day and time?
said its over the weekends fridays saturday and Sundays are all possible days 6 pm est time
Ahh that's 3pm pacific for me. Monday through Friday I work 7am to 6pm pacific Saturdays I'm mostly free except tomorrow I'm working at a carwash event for the homeless from 8am to 2:30pm office
Sundays I'm also mostly free unless on the rare occasion I'm asked to work with the homeless outreach team from 12pm to 5pm.
In short Saturdays and Sundays are best unless I'm asked to work. Fridays not so much lol.
Ok cool we can do saturdays or sundays ill let the dm know and well invite you to the server if your still interested once she gets stuff together
Sounds like a plan.
I found a humble bundle of ttrpgs for trans rights organizations that I want to share
https://itch.io/b/900/ttrpg-charity-bundle-for-trans-support
TTRPG Charity Bundle for Trans Support: 75 items for $20.00
hm this will be the first time in 6 weeks that our D&D group is getting together. wonder if tonight I can finally convince the DM to let my paladin have Adamantine Plate lol
My MOTW character fights a Heron ASMR
I had a great time at yesterdays session but man not talking for an hour while the team does all the work is exhausting
Sounds sarcastic but it isn't
I spent most of the RP parts being quiet cuz my paladin is not stealthy nor is she exactly the face and that was most of it. Then in the combat part I was sweating a bit cuz I was getting absolutely clobbered.
Which is fine, I'm the tank but boy you start to feel nervous when the first encounter of the dungeon has you eat like 70 damage
Very much a this is fine moment
https://c.tenor.com/-kZOB16tELEAAAAM/this-is-fine-fire.gif
I'd have been at negative HP if the mini-boss had another turn cuz I was sitting at 10HP but fortunately, party DPS got a lucky critical and high damage rolls on a spell so they dealt like 61 damage in their turns
I just remembered how much of a huge headache it was to format my old game using Homebrewery and I want to cry at the thought of spending another several nights fighting its weird CSS commands to make everything look right despite how fantastic it is at the end
the queerest dice
not pictured
my first set of rainbow dice or my lesbian dice
this is just today's haul
Mm jealous, I want some lgbt diceā¢ļø
same
got them from Roll With Advantage
not sure if they ship outside Australia
if anyone does shop on RWA tho, for the month you can use the checkout code PRIDE21 to get a discount on pride dice
they have a bit more of a selection, I just got the ones that apply to me
https://rollwithadvantage.com.au/ is this the correct shop link?
yes!
Oh those on the left look super nice
and you got the trans, nb, rainbow and ace(?) dice from their pride collection right here or are those different one among? :o
yeah those are all from their pride collection
they look very lovely ;w;
I also have their lesbian dice and their first run of rainbow dice, but I got those ages ago and they were already mixed in with my dice bag so I wasn't gonna get them out for the picture
honestly it was probably last pride month I got the lesbian and first edition rainbow dice lmao
do they look very differently to their current ones? :o
oh sorry didn't see this
not particularly, the colours are just a bit less clearly defined
oh goodness those are adorable
Just bought Griftlands! Idk if anybody's familiar with it?
Any of y'all play Monster of the Week?
Oops I meant to send that to the games chat channel but yes
I love MOTW it's my favorite ttrpg

this show is great if you have not seen it
Hello, painting my own boxes and dice trays is a hobby of mine, this is for a Twilight Cleric~
Oh wow that looks really cool
For a second I thought the glitter spots were dents made from rolling dice LOL
LOL itll probably happen too, those sharp edged dice are no joke
I made a terrain piece for my group! The first in-person session in over a year, so I wanted to celebrate! Behold the Mushroom Grove ~
happy, that's so friggin' cool
Wowww!! That looks so good! I'd love to play on that!
Mushroom Grove looks super awesome! š
Eeeeee thank you all!!! š
Duuuuuude
Yeesh and I'm over here barely able to draw straight lines over my square grid whiteboard lmao
IMO looks suspicious, but also promising
But the idea wasn't new, have looked into that myself
https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-M8pcXXVxdQCCjvXZttO
Almost done. Then we go get that Gold.
That's so cool! āØ
Ohhhh wow, it looks amazing š¤©
Waooowww that's amazing
Wow there's some incredible work in here!
that's really cool š
Thanks so much guys
not sure if this should go in tabletop or games chat
but my friend decided to run a roguelite dnd campaign
the basic rule for character creation is anything that has legs apearantly ( he made an adamant point of legs)
basically tho
we decided to all play characters from enter the gungeon
im playing these 2 bois (battlesmith)
my friend is playing goopton (alchemist)
and my other friend is playing blockner (Armorer)
i just realized we are all playing artificers, the campaigns meant to have us be reliant on the dice for what magic items we get
we basically without thinking decided to say no to that and i find it kinda funny
That's cool!!
Are you guys playing these in person?
Or more like roll20 style gameplay?
in person since we're all vaccinated and he has a big picnic table in his backyard
hopefully it will be!
I got to go to a game night last weekend for the first time in a year and a half. Everyone is vaccinated except my friend who hosts because she's pregnant and doctors told her she might be better off waiting til after the birth to get the shot
uh random question,
one of my friends is saying they reason wizards just makes races that should be large eg minotuar loxodon or goliath for example, the youre not large youre just strong trait is because large creatures get a damage bonus with weapons, except he cant say where he found it other then monster manual, but all monster manual says is check phb and phb is just like o heres what size they take up.
so is he just saying bs or is it somewhere and i cant find it
I'm not a DnD expert, but maybe that trait is a homebrew....? I haven't heard anything like that
I could be wrong tho. I'm still a DnD newb
(I'm referring to 5e only, not sure about other systems)
Iirc it's just simply that larger creatures typically do more damage in comparison to smaller creatures. But I dont believe there's a rule that explicitly states that Large creatures flat out do more damage? š¤
That being said if you look at the Enlarge Reduce spell, while you are enlarged in that way, you do an additional 1d4 of damage (or something like that). That could be where they got that impression??
But I don't believe (i could be wrong) there's an explicit rule that says large creatures get damage bonuses outside of that spell
Oops @primal perch sorry meant to reply to you so you were tagged š
its fine
but uh @frank wren @graceful cove it is in 5e i did some google searches a bit ago (its also in 3.5 which he grew up on and pathfinder) but in 5e it is in the dmg, in the monster creation section page 278 if a huge creature used a greataxe for example its 3d12
Ohhhhhhh interesting I didn't think to look there haha
yeah me neither
though this does mean
enlarge reduce as well as giants might
double your damage dice from your weapons
OH
That's disgusting I'm using that spell all the time if that stacks 𤣠š
"balanced"
it sorta does, get a rune knight in your party have them do giants might, then every caster do enlarge (eg with 2 casters 4 times damage dice)
on a fighter that hits 4 times a round
may or may not be playing a rune knight in my friends campaign now
i should note tho he already agreed to this charater being 8 foot tall
so much powerrrrrrrr
i just have to get a good role on the later on height increase
and then constant double damage dice
my friend in an attempt to tell me not to break dnd
allowed me to break dnd even more then ever before.
I wouldn't blame the DM if they said that rule doesn't stack but like... oh my god... the possibilities
true but also to get to gargauntuan you need at least 2 casters to use their consentration
an average of 3 casters tho
And this is how the DM ordered a miniature for mecha-tiamat XD
Fun fact I just learnt upon rereading it, if you desire you can have 5 times the dice but disadvantage
You can do some super goofy munchkin junk in 5e but it typically requires meta-gaming either perfectly optimal race/class/feat combos OR using sub-optimal options that chain together weird bonuses for maximum hilarity
IM HERE FOR THIS TYPE OF CHAOS YES PLEASE
I've always wanted to run a meta-gamey short campaign where everyone just breaks everything the whole time, it sounds so fun and chaotic. I just need the right group that will keep it fun and not too rules-lawyerly hahaha
Ok how you do it is very simple you first need to be gargantuan then you need a weapon 1 size higher then that you could wield, a purely hypothetical size, sounds hard to pull of but, if you carry a large weapon normally it will be huge when youāre large, gargantuan when youāre huge and idfk when youāre gargantuan which does give you disadvantage but the size.
imo, playing that way is less fun because TTRPGs are about making your character the best you can, and not making the best character you can. but some people enjoy breaking games, and one of my gaming buddies is like this so typically if he plays in a game, I just build in things to mess with him specifically lol
I just enjoy breaking em on paper
Finding op combos
Like uh little fun fact mobile +10 speed right?
my current paladin would 100% be better if I'd made her a half-elf but I completely forgot half elves exist when writing her up lol
Wrong letās say you have a climbing speed equal to your walking then itās +20 because it applies twice
I just want to actually do it for like 2 sessions worth and then go back to normal programming hahaha I am a roleplayer at heart that does the opposite of min-maxing but i wanna peak at the other side hahah
Same
Also artificer can get kinda op
Kinda very op
Especially with the right party combos
I'm DMing an artificer and it's bananas
Since it can make magic items basically
I mean for example why not give your party members who as weāve calculated has 5x dmg dice extra buffs
Alchemist is fun
Yuuup survival campaign who, they've had a bag of holding because of him this whole time lmao
OH GOD
A ARTIFICER COUDL MAKE THEIR ARTILLERY OR ROBOT BIGGER ( if I recall right they get enlarge reduce)
I just wanna be an artificer for the robot pets XD
Multiclass with ranger for real pet. Multiclass again druid to talk to them. perfect. I am my own party now hahaha
Fusie mishmash, bureaucratic capitalist wunderkind
Love. That.
She made her riches selling poison to 2 rivial assassins guilds
YES
Since uh poison production is actually incredibly profitable
With a small vial of poison going for 100 gold
Low level artificers have an infusion
That can basically print poison btw
From an economic standpoint alone artificer breaks the game
Wowwwww now I wanna be an artificet so I can save up and buy a business lol
She ended up buying a large plot of land in my friends campaign world in a area basically filled with what I canāt remember the name for so Iām just gonna call uh
Magic oil
Incredibly profitable
Like
That's so fun!!
my buddy played in a Shadowrun game I ran, and his character was a caffeine-addicted elf who spent all the money he earned doing runs on buying a warehouse and lab equipment so he could reverse-engineer Buzz!Blitz, a gigantic energy drink made for trolls that was taken off the market because non-trolls would basically have their nervous system explode if they drank it lol
Hahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha WHAT hahaaha thats incredible!
I've never played Shadowrun but whenever I hear about it, ir sounds like a good time. Yours is absolutely no exception šš
yeah he'd always get into whatever transportation the gang was using with like a 100z mug of coffee and a dozen 5 hour energy shots
and he would just slam every single drop on the way to whatever was going on
I relate to that you know lol
the rest of the group would just stare at him and he'd be like "what's wrong" while vibrating in place
š "whats wrong" thats so funny
also he was bad with technology and complained to the party hacker that his commlink (smartphone, more or less) was acting up so the hacker was like "ok lemme see it"
and my buddy says, "Z-r0 hands over his commlink to Julie, and this is what Julie sees:" then linked a picture of a browser with like 70 toolbar links in it
and the hacker is just like "I'm gonna have an aneurysm"
Your character sounds so fun oh no, I love it
My wife's character was a sniper/infiltrator elf who was born in the Vatican, and in the Shadowrun timeline, the Vatican is a super hotspot of magical energy so it produces tons and tons of mages and the Church is full of high-level wizards, more or less. her family was embroiled in lots of political shenanigans within the church
but the hangup was her character was the only one in the family who wasn't Awakened so she had no magic powers. instead they trained her to be a wetworks operative with physical weaponry since none of the targets typically expected to get sniped or stabbed as their defenses were focused on magic. also the rumors were that the pope was her grandfather lol
That sounds super cool!!!
anyway, her character had a falling out with her family, took all her stuff and moved to Seattle, where she started getting into shady back alley gigs just to spite her rich, influential mom and spent all her money buying exotic animals to keep in her penthouse suite
I should look more into that system it seems so cool
That's a way to do it š respect
I...love Shadowrun but the core system is unbelievably crunchy and kind of a headache to manage if you're not willing to basically houserule a ton of stuff
Ahh gotcha. Not too worried about houseruling things but my group is very wary on learning new systems š©
Every single firearm in the game has different damage values and like a half dozen different modifications that will affect the gun's different variables such as recoil, distance, ammo capacity, etc, for example
It's incredible with regards to how in-depth it is at managing certain things
also, the game has different rules for how things work in meatspace versus the Astral (mage dimension) versus the Matrix (hacker dimension) and only mages can get into the Astral while only deckers can truly dive into the Matrix so if your decker decides to jack in, well, the rest of your party is twiddling their thumbs while the decker is doing their thing
that said
Wowww that sounds like class decisions can be very meaningful though. Makes players feel special i bet which is nice
Shadowrun is legitimately one of my favorite settings (the future US elects a dragon to be president), and if a group thinks it's neat, I'd recommend trying to find some sourcebooks for Shadowrun Anarchy. It's a significantly stripped down version of the rules and plays more like the FATE system so it runs much smoother and much faster with a lot of the clunky stuff pulled out
Shadowrun doesn't do classes, exactly.
Oh awesome thank you I'll see if I can look into that
Oh is it... professions?? Maybe?
There's archetypes (like street samurai who can be either huge beefy chromed out tanks or agile ninja wallrunning assassins) but you'll typically say "I want to do tech and computer stuff" and you'll take skills to reflect that
Ohhhh neat!!!
Archetypes are street samurai or decker (a hacker-type) or mage (caster) or rigger (drone specialist) but it's not like, say, D&D where if you pick Street Samurai then you're locked into a class-specific advancement tree
I really like that, sounds flexible
It does have some exclusivity that'll lock you out of certain options based on character customization
Makes sense!
the game defines people as having a spirit or soul, and if you start replacing your body with cyberware, then you also sacrifice part of your spirit
so if you're decked out in chrome, you can't really be a mage because you simply won't have enough of a spirit to conjure up the astral power necessary to cast spells
I like that
Oh really?? Like an antihero or are you usually the baddies?
Runners are, categorically, broken somehow because otherwise you would not be doing shadow work for cash. Maybe it's a drug addiction, maybe you got on the wrong side of some gangers, maybe you gotta pay off a debt, or maybe you just really like violence
I'd say typically falls more on the anti-hero side because one major part of your character/group progression is called Street Cred, and doing outright villainous things can actually decrease your cred
Assassination or murder jobs, for example, are turned down almost universally by runners
There are certain things that will also straight up just turn your character into an NPC (delving in to blood magic, for example) because the narrative structure just declares, "there's simply no way you could even try to justify yourself as an anti-hero or that you're crusading against corporate tyranny when you start torturing people to gain power"
Wowow this setting sounds SO fun! Ok I'm won over I want to look into it more for sure!! Maybe if I grab what you recommended and get a good grip on it I can convince my friends to try it!!
Ahhh it just sounds so coooool
Like all RPGs, there's combat and sometimes in combat, people die, but runners also recognize those people are just trapped as cogs in the corporate machine like everyone else so killing John Smith the night shift guard at the local Ares office isn't gonna do anything
so they'd rather set it up so they can just avoid John Smith altogether
You could try out the Shadowrun games to get a better sense of the setting! I've never actually played it as a TTRPG but the video games are fun =w=
yeah Shadowrun Returns are three incredible games
I threw money into the kickstarters for both Dragonfall and Hong Kong
they're on sale rn too!
I wish they'd make more but Paradox just has them churning out DLC for Battletech now
anyway...let me see if they've done anything more with Anarchy since I bought the original book at Gen Con back in like 2017
Oooo ok I'll check those out thank you!!
so all I can find is that some of the SR5e splatbooks added extra Anarchy content but I don't see like a...Anarchy 2E or anything. I'd still recommend Anarchy, but the book editing is very splotchy so you'll have to re-read things a couple times or just kinda...make it up lol
As an example, one of the items you can purchase is a medkit but there exactly zero rules in the book which define how much damage medkits will heal so I wound up just basing medkit values off the healing spell mages have access to. I think I said normal medkits do 1 die less than the healing spell while the larger medkits did the same as a heal spell so there was some incentive for the heal spell to be picked occasionally
also I think the premade characters are busted in that they actually used more Build Points than you have access to at the level they were created but they're good guidelines and frankly would probably work if you're just trying to feel out the system/setting
there's a wiki too where you can just read the setting timeline and it's incredible because you have moments where, like, a German company is struggling as their stocks are slowly being eaten up until some mysterious entity gets 51% of shares, walks in the board room and goes "I'm the new boss now"
and when someone objects, the guy reveals his true nature by transforming into a dragon, eating the objector and then again says "i'm the new boss now"
Ah thank you thank you I'm noting all of this for later!! I have to skitter back to work but ty for sharing and all the info

I've heard of it but that's all really
oh its really cool, basically scifi 80s movies the ttrpg
plus no combat system
Okay yes that is something I am definitely in to lol
ye you also play pre teens which justmakes it more 80s vibes
Are we talking more ET, Paper Girls, or Stranger Things kinda vibe?
stranger things but less dark and so ig et, havent seen paper girls
The show isn't out yet but the comic is excellent. I'll have to check out this game though!
also well it is called a stranger things clone by some people
the idea was actaully made before stranger things trailers even existed
Meh everything takes inspiration from other things i won't hold that against it. More for it tbh lol I love that entire 80s sci fi shtick
@graceful cove crying rn just found out page 205 of the phb basically says enlarge reduce doesnt stack
Nooooooooooooooooooooo!! š
certian monk subclasses can cast 9th level spells
sure theyre just 1st or 2nd level spells at 9th level slots
but still
i site the searing arc strike of the sun soul
its not op or anything
its just fun to know imo
hey @graceful cove I know we were talkin about checking out Shadowrun stuff the other day and mentioned the video games. You can currently get the entire Shadowrun Returns trilogy for like $8 on Steam
oh it's also completely free on GOG right now too
Whaaaat!! Oh my gosh thank you so much for thinking to tell me ahhh ty ty!!
if you do get them, I'd start with Shadowrun: Returns. If you feel like the mechanics of the game aren't...great, then I'd move to Dragonfall. The games aren't sequential and nothing in them is related other than the setting, but Harebrained really started polishing the game functions with Dragonfall and really nailed them perfectly in Hong Kong
Ohhh very good to know!! Thank you again for being so informative I appreciate it!
whend it come out (for a general guess of the era it feels from)
ummm I think Shadowrun Returns was...2013?
They mostly made some streamlining improvements to how you use items in your inventory and, specifically, to how the Matrix sections of the game work. The meatspace sections don't change too drastically between any of the games other than the UI getting more intuitive, but the difference between the first and third games' Matrix is pretty huge.
actually I think I said the games aren't sequential but the ending of Shadowrun: Returns sorta strongly implies your character is recruited to do some stuff in Germany, which ends up being the events of Dragonfall. but there's no continuity between the plots
h damn i was excited you meant like 90s old
weeeellllll
the original Shadowrun: Returns game was on the Sega in the mid 90s lol
but the PC reboots are from the last decade
ah ok
hmmm maybe? Fluxx can be...hectic sometimes and can have a lot going on. Depending on their attention span, I know some rounds of it can go on for a LONG time too while others wind up with you getting eliminated very rapidly.
Yes, but also it's a bad idea to do so unless you're 100% confident you could manage it
Out of context I play dnd. So when I found out I could do this with a simple paper towel roll I am happy.SOUND WARNING
Guys I actually accidentally made a tank of a player for d&d
And Iāve never been more proud
Doxia the destroyer True chief of the Embereye tribe (inspired by the lion king) a leonin barbarian lady who was kicked out of the tribe by her twin brother because he wanted to be chief and he knew as powerful as she was he wouldnāt have a chance with her around so he framed her for a crime she didnāt commit
oh ik its a horrible idea but i want too yknow
2 epic ideas
can i ask a dnd question
kinda lore based but also gameplay based
in summary
why do sorcerers need an arcane focus
arent they already the focus
theyre quite literally a conduit for the weave afterall
you know that's actually a really goods question, I've never thought about that
hey @primal perch found something
Only innate casters don't require a focus or components. Sorcerers' spellcasting is not innate, even though their raw magic is. Spellcasting is learned and can be further developed.
how the hell is it not innate
so essentially they still require a focus and components to warp the weave
even though they are conduits
but there are lore examples, like Cloud Giants that can just innately use the weave
it's really weird
ye its innate to the cloud giants but its not to a storm sorcerer for example literal cloud giant kin
wtf, I don't know it's really weird that it's not innate, obviously in game it's because of balancing, but in lore it just doesn't make sense
ye but
theres a simple way of balancing it in my eyes
they still need components because they arent purely innate casters
just not the focus
We simply āØdonāt track that stuff⨠at my table lol
its kinda the same for mine but my table cares about the focus a lot for some reason i dont quite get
by we i mean
one of us will get really mad about focuses
I donāt get why the fairy unearthed arcana doesnāt have the traits of the fey wanderer ranger? The traits would come from the feywild which fairies are a part of???
Like I like the idea of a fairy but I feel like itās... underwhelming
The feywild ranger quirks would fit them perfectly
You know how you can divert lightning with a lightning rod?
yeah
And how you need to turn on the āswitchā to turn on the light bulb, or else the circuit isnāt complete?
I imagine itās sort of like that
Besides, the focus only applies for spells that require material components
every other innate caster doesnt need a focus though
i get what youre saying though
Sorcerers are the battery for the lightbulb ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Bards use their instruments as a focus tho I'm fairly certain
Not quite relevant to the 'topic'
The question is why sorcerers require an arcane focus, when their whole thing is possessing the very essence of magic.
Alexed-cola is presenting them as 'innate casters'
My wife ran a game that was basically Harry Potter but in a crazy multiverse where we played as kids going through magic classes. My character was this manticore-type race of cat people with heavy viking flavors and he punched Really Good. He came back in the 2nd year with a nasty facial scar from challenging his father on tribal law and getting wrecked
What up
Hiii
can't decide whether to make my wood elf a ranger or druid?
Sometimes I make wood elves and half wood elves just for the movement speed
I like the druid~
But go with whatever playstyle you wanna do
idk thats the problem- both have some really good subclasses
okay where should the high scores on a druid go? and do you add the +s to the overall rolls and then out them in with the + underneath? I'm newer so it's hard to remember
My paladin is a wood elf but only because I forgot half elves were a thing when making her lol
We used a stat array though so it let me dump Dex and use her racial bonus to avoid having any negative modifiers though
question: if you have an aarakocra player in your party do you nerf their fly ability or nah (as the dm)
just curious what your opinions are
I mean, it depends on the campaign and where you're going to have them
If you take it into account and make the flying speed part of solutions (ie aarakocra flies something before a bunch of vampires descend on a chapel in Curse of Strahd)
Or you could make flying not a benefit in all situations by setting up low ceilinged dungeons
Basically most of the time if the player isn't trying to win at D&D and being an asshole you should be fine.
Wisdom first, then Dex or Con
Fair enough lmao. I was just curious because I am potentially DMing a group of my irl friends (who happen to be newbies) and may be taking the game as "I need to win" ykyk
Talking to your players about like the vibe, and also not necessarily mentioning the benefits of flight might be enough that you don't need to nerf it
Just finished running a game where I'm Co-DMing and it is so great. The other DM and I share a character that is basically possessed by an old adventurer who pissed off an old now dead druid. So there are two personalities in one body basically and its freaking the other party members out cause they don't know why the character's personality changed, so much fun hahaha
Dude thats amazing
thats like probably one of my favorite character ideas ive ever heard š
Highly recommend for anyone thinkingnof Co-DMing lol we are using a module adventure (lost mines) so there hopefully wont be any contradictions
my friend just
tamed a t rex
well being wounded and frighten
so two less dice
and got 3 successes
on 3 dice
may or may not have found this just searching warhammer in the search bar... but yes! 40k, or heresy?
ooooo nice! any shenanigans or was it fairly standard?
It was fairly standard, just to familiarize ourselves about how things go, but still, so fun!
yee nice!
I mainly felt overwhelmed during the first hours but after that i felt ecstatic! Hehe
Thats so exciting!!
the secret to running D&D is to just steal all your players' ideas about the plot and pretend they were yours all along. the secret to playing is not playing the best character you can but playing your character the best you can.
so true!
i had fun playing with my somehow more charismatic than needed simpleton cleric lol
i play a paladin who is a big dumb hero and she's fun as heck
very much an All Might rip off
yeah, i had a low arcana and religion roll so whenevr my party encounter one that might benefit from that ability and they look at me mine were just like,
"Don't look at me, even my deity hates me."
my paladin slammed a town guard through a table for talking gross about a lady lol
I'm in D&D right now, playing a changeling, the rest of the party doesn't know about her abilities š
have fun! a long or short campaign?
i think that was my dm's first test of if i was committed to being a nosy hero
Long I think, it just started we're at level 3 right now it's an Ice Wind Dale campaign
I don't actually know, this is only my 2nd session with them xD
I'm super excited about my character though, she was raised by the Drow in the underdark, and trained to be an assassin. She escaped, and she's trying to be good, but she doesn't always understand what "good" is xD
ah, at least she has the spirit.
She'll figure it out eventually xDD
Had a session last night where my High INT character had a curiosity killed the cat moment while dealing with a Lolth artifact and now is "feeble minded" š š¤£
My last seesion had the lowest INT character in the party nailing ALL of the INT checks and at the end of the mission we asked him
"Did you just happen to be enlightened at this time of day?"
I love when the dice work against your stats hahaha
My datemate wants me to do a puzzle crawl style one shot for them and some friends. I have some puzzle ideas of different difficulties, but I was wondering if anyone here might have some places I could look for more
ok, so I think I've mentioned it before but my wife ran a game years ago that was turbo-fantasy Harry Potter. basically we played as kids who came from all over a multiverse and were in a special school for teaching the kids various magic techniques, complete with different "houses" where the kids were sorted to based on abilities. my character was specifically non-magical; he was just a stupid viking-esque brawler meathead. except...I constantly rolled well on the magic spell stuff so he was just like this idiot savant at magic
a friend in the game played this very noble princely type character who had been tutored for years in magic so his parents could get him married into a wealthy, elite family when he was old enough.....and he constantly bombed magic rolls despite supposedly having been taught basic stuff his entire life lol
LOL see!! so great!
I dunno what system you're playing in, but I think the new "Tasha's Cauldron of Everything" had a big puzzle section. obviously they're made for D&D but they could be hacked into anything
Played Clank Legacy last night and my sweet Duchess couldnāt handle all the action! š¤£š„°
My d&d friend drew this picture of my genasi bard inspired by the genie from aladdin a la Robin Williams
Oh boy, im hella hype to see a tabletop/boardgame section here ahh,,, let me yell into the void how much I love dnd and ttrpgs in general cjdjdn im playin every sunday n tuesday and I love drawing my characters hngg
My current obsession is my wizard Zen,,, also love that the dm allowed me to have an owl griffin bc they're so cute

My dm decided he wanted to make elfs more then just pointy eared humans in appearance in my campaign world
And we got nightvaley in what we did (he talked to me to help him decide since Iām playing a elf)
elfs (doesnāt apply to half elfs theyāre still standard) have long skinny fingers and limbs with a skin thatās not bark like, or scale like, or skin like, itās something else... thereās gonna be an elvish word for it but he said heād come up with that later, as well as having no hair (he decided to turn the elfs canāt grow beards up to 11 and Iām a fan of it) as well as making it so that non elf humanoids canāt remember what a elfs face looks like, they can recognize them though
I really like all of them since it gives them a very alien feel compared to their original designs
nice!
Sheās inspired by Robin Williams Genie and Annapantsu
Cuz sheās a girl genie
Obviously sheās a bard
not a genie warlock?
Nah
i have a very similiar character design on my genie warlock
Thatād be aladdin lol
though a very different character skin tone
Aladdin would make more sense for that
I thought about it
the subclass works for making a thor type character
I really did think about making a genie warlock inspired by aladdin himself
But like itās if jasmine found the lamp- like Jafar somehow got the lamp without help and she finds it lying around (before jafar has a chance to use it to make himself sultan) and she has no idea what it is and is curious and accidentally summons it herself
Like if the roles were reversed kinda thing
Kinda like the twisted tale disney book series but not as dark
I relate to that on a spiritual level, that happens to too many of my characters š¤£
Being fundamentally the same, or losing the shirt dramatically?
would anyone be down to look over a homebrew subclass and balance check it
IDK if this is for this channel or podcasts but when I'm caught up on dimension 20 should I start listening to Not Another DnD Podcast or Critical Role?
I absolutely love NADD pod!!! I laugh so much while listening to their gaming sessions and find it to be super relatable and reminiscent of how my gaming sessions go with my friends - no one takes themselves too seriously, there's a ton of laughter and shenanigans from crazy decisions! Don't get me wrong, Critical Role is amazing and their production value is top tier. I just find NADD pod to be more relatable and similar to my play style. #2crew
this is so cool š
Oh gosh much excite
First time watching Critical Role and they're launching the third campaign in a few weeks XD
I wonder what homebrew class will Taliesin play this time around xD
I can only bet about it and I'll lose 100%
Dnd is beautiful
A party with a totally human wizard
An aasimar watcher paladin
And of course
A British goblin with the Wallace and grommet trousers
His characters reason for it is so he can be taller then everyone
And I love that
I don't even care to mention his class since
Aside from when he had to tell me during character creation
He just says he has 3 trouser levels
ah, very proficient in trouser usage
Okay, so.
I would like to preface this by saying that yes, I know that dream sequences are a clichƩ, and sometimes a little bit lazy. But also, I like them, because I already have some other stuff I need to figure out.
Basically, I've just shown one of my players the 'face' of her personal villain. Everyone in the party essentially has one of these - it's something I wanted to do from the outside. For another of my player's, it's her childhood friend. This one is a bit more low-effort, because I'm running a module, and that character already exists.
But this other character is, well. My own design. And a lot scarier. And I'm really excited about him, because. There's no escape from him. He kind of sort of can't die, to an extent. Rather, he has a cat's nine lives. And so far, he has only spoken to her from a distance, because she was given an Amulet of Proof against Protection and Location. And he didn't know where she was until an NPC stole it from her, briefly, which meant he could catch the scent. And now, gradually, he's breaking the amulet's gemstone (it's a plot thing). Which means he can start to invade her dreams.
Basically, she's a Good-aligned tiefling, and he's an Evil-aligned aasimar, and to a point, they're twins. They were born on the same day and are the same age, both have something called a Spellscar - which means, sort of like a Wild Magic Sorcerer, they've been marked by powerful, raw magic. And these spellscars grant them powers that I'm still working out and she can't access them yet nor does the player know about them.
And I am getting way too excited about this, way too early, because basically if they fight him, it's going to essentially just be a bunch of shadow clones but one's a fighter, one's a bard, one's a wizard, and so on.
I'm not making much sense because I don't have it all pinned down yet and y'all are missing context but he's just real spoopy and I like the player's character and her story so much and I want it to go faster because the module has the party be on the road for two whole months where nothing really happens
Have you ever tried to fail but succeeded anyway?
One of my OCās was modified for DnD and itās a long running joke between friends that their HP and AC are garbage
Due to me accidentally rolling well they have the highest HP in the party and the second highest AC
WHYYYYY
this is late ik but one of my players in a past campaign kept rolling insanely good when trying to do stupid ideas but poorly in other contexts, by the end of one session he had convinced a group of kobolds he was the only god purely by rolling i think it was 3 nat 20s in the process (also ik that it wasnt weighted cause that die is literally all over the place)
So uh
It's possible to cast 8 cantrips in 1 turn
They have to be from the sorcerer or cleric spell list tho
I demand an opinion
So running a campaign soonish
But basically one of the players is upset I won't let him play custom lineage
And said it was al legal (it's literally not)
But it wasn't that I wouldn't it's that I wouldn't for races that are already basically in the game
Like half Goliath which
What does that mean
Do you wanna be humanish then do vatiant human if you wanna be a mix maybe half orc if you wanna be a half Goliath tho
You just wanna be a Goliath
They're literally magically fused giant humans
He also previously told me I couldn't play a duergr cause it didn't fit (in faerun)
I mean, Goliaths aren't actually humans, but that's not the point you're making here.
I mean, with Custom Lineage, I admittedly don't really see a major issue, unless you're playing for AL? It's a feat, a language, and a skill proficiency (he cannot take darkvision, because neither humans nor goliaths have it, and if he tries to argue that, well, that's another issue). However, as a DM that is your right to say no to, and I think I would say no to that, too, just based on my own comfort level in the mechanics.
Actually according to past books their creation had the owlbear treatment according to what I could find. Some wizard combined humans with giants. That might be wrong though as I cannot check that book due to not owning it
Plus I think that it trivializes picking human
Since at least the way I see it it's better variant
And who picks base
Some other books also claim they're related to earth elementals or stone giants.
It's unclear
But! I do get what you're saying there.
Ye those are the giants I meant and even if it is elementals they'd still be more like a half and half then their own species
Eh, it's an unanswered story.
Of course, of course (much like duergar)
A nod to how he wouldn't let you play one, in that they are true to faerun
Okay
Oh btw I should not he switched his argument a yesterday (its been months since the campaign he brought the duergr up actually as comparison for why I should let him?
And his argument switched to j didn't wanna rp racists
Which
There was a tiefling in the party
And he frequently told him I could do drow instead
Which if anything I'd say there'd be more racism too due to their economy being built on slavery
I mean, duergar are based on slavery too
True but
Yeah
When you think of underdark slavery
Same difference
What pops in your head
All of the above
What pops in the head of the commoners who've only heard stories of a word dark below where strange elves take slaves
Well if they've heard of drow, they've heard of duergar
I say that cause there's as far as ik more knowledge drow exist
Eh, I can't speak for or against that, so I'll trust you there for now
There's more stories of drow going to the surface
Plus the least racist tm underdark town is I think owned by duergr
Anyway, the best thing you can really do is lay down his options, and even though he seems to be argumentative, you'll have to be willing to compromise;
He can play a human, or goliath, or if he's set on playing a half-goliath, maybe use half-orc as a base. Or, for example, you tell him he can play a goliath who is much smaller than their kin due to having a human a long way back in their ancestry.
Well, that won't be true anymore, for the most part, since drow lore got a rework.
Oh?
Yeah, basically the Lolth-worshippers are now the exception to the rule
Okay
That was literally the first thing I offered
His response was and I qoute
So you wouldn't let someone play a mouse race since the dmg says half lings work for that
Not quite what you said, though, right?
Yeay
Is he typically a problem player, or is this the only thing he really gets really hung up on?
Happens with every character basically
I cite call of cthulhu
In which I both told him I didn't want him to play an aviator or a ww1 vet and he proceeded to do both in 1 character
You're gonna suggest cutting him I'm sure
And we'll that's a great idea
Nah
Cutting someone from a game should be a last resort, and this doesn't sound like someone who needs that kind of semi-drastic action.
Well, then, my advice is to reiterate that he can play a human, half-orc or goliath, or he will need to think of some other character. And that while you appreciate his character idea, D&D requires compromise and comfort - the first of which you are offering by presenting alternative options, and the second of which you are trying to maintain, by not allowing something in the game that you do not feel confident you can run.
But, I will be honest with you - if this guy genuinely is a problem player, you probably should talk to him about some of these problematic behaviours, and hope he responds to that in a positive way. If he starts to change, that's good. If not, well. That's the big question of if it would be healthier for your friendship to not play together anymore, or if you can manage him despite the difficulty.
His response to my bit was literally stated that that argument already ended and that he's tired of it . Which apparently it ended with him saying he'd make a honebrew half Goliath which I thought was a joke
Also that he's tired of me bringing the same argument up
Same old*
Because well yes
We have had similar before it's not the same
Again he wanted to play a pilot ww1 vet in coc which I said no to and finally said yes too after like 1 month of him not accepting it
This is becoming more and more ventish
Then maybe, if he tries it with this character, you just... refuse to let him play? Which I know can be exhausting and very difficult to say and do, but that's just the problem.
Better to play with him and maybe feel uncomfortable because you guys have been friends for years? Or to remove him from the game to avoid that?
Either way, it might not be a bad thing. And while I know what I would do if I were in that situation, I can't put myself in your situation, with your experience and your thoughts and the context that you have; so only you can make the informed decision here. That's really all I can offer, tbh. So... yeah.
WOTC is ALL ABOUT THE COCK right now
I just got my whole DnD party into Critical role

So I'm living a minor rpg horror story of my own creation right now.
So it all started when my girlfriend invited me to her DnD table because a player left. Problem was I had JUST joined a table and none of the people at her table were american.
Worst than that, I knew all of the players. They were from a SUPER clingy discord server, where the head mods are tripping over their little bits of power, and I STILL get messages from the server members asking why I left when I left IN SEPTEMBER.
Also because none of the players were American the timezones were AWFUL.
To make a long story short we are now playing the game at 4 AM EST.
I didn't want to play at that time, but my gf and I were one disagreement away from a breakup and I was so desperate to save what was left of the relationship.
Well, shortly before the session she dumped me.
So now I'm stuck in a 4 AM DnD game with my ex girlfriend, and a bunch of people I don't like.
I am NOT looking forward to the session tomorrow
No context DnD quotes "Everyone call me Poppy, that's my prison name." - Marigold "Poppy" Azalea
I am patiently waiting on a table top version of Monster Hunter to be finished up production wise! I backed it on Kickstarter last year they are now making the 3D printed monsters and hunters. Can't wait to play it!
YEAH! I LOVE MONSTER HUNTER
TTRPG stories from Saturday
"So next thing you know, Marigold is climbing into the window and standing directly over David's bed."
(David, our Bard) "What the fuck are you doing Marigold it's midnight, HOW DID YOU FIND MY HOUSE!"
Marigold: "I kid you not David, the alchemist turned himself into a PICKLE, it was the funniest shit I had ever seen."
I am not sure when or if the boardgame I backed on Kickstarter will hit stores. Covid affected a lot of productions and people.
My DnD PC already has the most comically long name, and we're only a few sessions in
Azalea "Marigold Poppy Chrysanthemum" Ravenridge
Basically, my Rogue is very secretive about her real name (Azalea Ravenridge) so they keep giving the party fake names.
Which have been slimmed down to one name
I had one campaign I backed arrive the other day, it was Tiny epic dungeons. I'm curious to play it
I've been amassing games without people to play them with
I'd be happy to join one!
Even if I don't play any of the ttrpgs on here, it'll be worth it to help and support vulnerable children that this shit head is gunning for: https://itch.io/b/1308/ttrpgs-for-trans-rights-in-texas

You conjure a primeval fort with walls of sharpened wood adorned with dinosaur skin and teeth, up to 300 feet on a side. Each of the four quadrants of the fort is guarded by a tyrannosaurus. While the tyrannosauruses won't cross into the others' territories, their reach allows them to simultaneously attack an intruder near the center of the fort...

Ooo good luck!
Thank you!
Y'all ever wish roll20 was easier to use? And that Chris Perkins or whoever it is that decides map scales went with 5ft squares instead of 20ft squares?
Because right now, I'm trying to work my way up to running the 'Castle Naerytar' stage of Hoard of the Dragon Queen. And I've got a few ideas on how to handle a siege (the coloured dots represent how many hits a creature can take, as opposed to tracking damage).
But because you can't easily manage map sizes in roll20, and the squares are 20ft, my brain needs a little bit of a break. For clarification - at the moment, the humanoid creatures (lizardfolk, bullywugs/frogmen, and cultists) are four to a square. AKA, they each get a 10ft space. Technically, I should be able to fit up to 16 in a square - 5ft space each, and all.
Hmmm... one of these things is not like the other.
Look what came todaaaaay
