Buckle in you all it’s gonna be a long ride of an unedited ramble from me.
I really like the BR genre of shooters. It combines an extremely large player count with pseudo survival elements, and an environment where you’re not just getting in gunfights but maneuvering before and after them to set up the engagements, all in a digestible package that’s usually over in 30min tops.
Now for mobile BRs, we now have 3 major titles - PUBGM, CODM, and ApexM. While they are all in (or have game modes that are in) the same BR genre of shooters, they differ from each other enough that they’re completely different experiences. For some reason it’s become fashionable to say that PUBGM (and more recently ApexM) are the better BR titles while CODM’s BR is boring, probably because those games are BR first, MP second, while CODM is MP first, BR second, but I’m here to state the case for CODM BR superiority.
To begin, PUBGM is “realistic” to the point of being borderline boring. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun back when mobile shooters weren’t very mature, and is still great when you want a more grounded/less fantastical shooter experience. But it’s a vanilla gun game that is a walking simulator 80% of the time, which is made worse by average round length being a long 30min. If I wanted milsim I really wouldn’t be on mobile and could do much better than PUBG. For a mobile BR I want something more creative, fast-paced, and quicker overall.
ApexM solves a lot of the issues in PUBGM through its signature systems like the legends and corresponding abilities, as well as faster game pace. It however lacks a lot of engagement dynamics that detract from the overall experience. The map is designed in such a way that long lines of sight are blocked and players are funneled into pre-designated zones. Consequently long-range engagements are rare and almost never decisive, being limited to skirmishing. Sniper rifles are really mid-range weapons. The map design choices also forgo the need for vehicles, which fits with ...
