In solo mode it seems ship components can't get damaged and catch on fire from battle. The only thing that ever gets damaged and needs repairs is the ship core.
I'm fine with it not happening as often as when you have a full crew in MP, but don't disable it from solo completely. It helps keep the game more dynamic when more stuff can go wrong on the ship.
