#Variable Jump Height

It exists in much more than just Mario lol
But yeah generally the platformers get the variable jump height stuff
I was thinking hollow knight when I typed this out
But obviously 2d is not 3d
honestly i think id like a "high jump" instead of a double jump
because with double jumps, normal jumping becomes pointless
so if "high jumping" was added where you held the jump button to charge up a higher and faster jump, exploration wouldnt really be hindered, but at the same time, dodging certain attacks in pvp becomes more strategic
The only reason I mentioned both jumps is because hollow knight, you can adjust the height of both your single jump and you mid air jump by holding the button
Smash mechanic??!?!?!?!!
So many games have this mechanic
Skyrim, zelda games, smash, super mario games, new pokemon games, sea of thieves, like 95% of large games
yeah its a massive mechanic
offers more movement mechanics
adds more layers than youd think for a lot of games
It just needs to be a lower variable, not a huge difference
yeah aslong as the difference isnt massive its usually a good idea
Smash is the only thing I can think of that succeeds with the large gap and it only has the large gap due to a tech that isn't something casual players usually learn
Yeah its great
I love comp smash
Its so much fun
Makes a game feel more finished
Just like when casual gamers lean when turning in racing games, that same casual will instinctively hold the jump button to jump "more" (higher)
By the relation used here, I fully expected you to say that they'd jump irl
no they’d just press the jump button harder
I've seen both, to be fair 😅
What a sight that would be
Gamers jumping is somewhat impossible though
That's physical exercise
Sounds like the end of the world tbh
I'd like to avoid that if possible
Yeah, i dont really leave my chair
I roll it around because it has wheels
When i need to sleep i build up speed to catapult onto my bed which uses all 120000 calories i digested in my last meal
theres an underground community
but our aura is like a barrier
the spiritual pressure of our gamer musk keeps us from being discovered
Honestly and i mean this with all due respect, i think that would just make pvp even more annyoing and precise inputs harder to pull off it does sound nice though.
That's why I mentioned it'd have to be a very low rangw of extra height
Apologies, i didnt read it mate
all good
I just had a thought:
Out of combat has variable jump height
In combat, the variable is shrunk to the minimum. This way, running from fights is difficult when you're in one, but running away from somebody in combat can be made easier 🤷♂️
games that do jump fatigue and things like reduced movement in combat always feel very forced
and it also causes lopsided fights when in outnumbers battles
You know what, that's true and valid. I'm only thinking of 1on1s
In that case, best case scenario would be to make the variable jump just very tiny, and only apple to the ground jump, not the double jump. Just something to make the movement feel a little more "flowy"
almost like I suggested that be the case 👀
What can I say, a smart man's ideas are meant to be replicated
