Yeah, tbh when I cant have high stakes to lose all my progress after dying I get really upset and start thinking "Man, this game would be so much more fun if I had to grind to get where I'm at all over again."

and when you already have that option to try new stuff open to the player, especially in a game with a quest and level based progression system, it'll become more frustrating because you'll have to do the same quests when you wipe

I think it worked so well is because it had that same "try new things" aspect but you didnt have the same pains of progression

permadeath games force diversity upon you though, it's far more appealing to most players to make a different build knowing that you now have a clean sheet and there're no traces of your last build even existing. And even if you try to replicate your last build it'll never be 100% identical taking into consideration all the different things that contribute to build diversity (for deepwoken this would be: oaths, stats, bells,murmurs, etc.)
permadeath can be frustrating depending on the person, i do agree with what you said about repeating quests in order to progress, permadeath games need a ton of variety in the ways that you can progress
