Well it sounds like a scam, and pulling people to DMs is a common practice in scamming
If it can't be said publicly in this server, it's not appropriate for this server
Is this game dev chat for like all of the game?
Yes, with a interest in topics related to discord such as the social sdk
ok

tbh iโd love to make an fps game like cs go. i know itโs gonna be tough and iโm still new to game dev, but iโm really looking forward to it. iโm good at web and bot development, just havenโt stepped into the game world yet
WHY DOES LUA CONFUSE ME SO MUCH ๐ญ๐ญ
Same reason as it does for everyone else, tables are used for everything and indexes start at 1
local hi = โhiโ

Iโm trying to get into Godot tried a few tutorials already
Lower like that
Hmm
๐๐
what do you all think, which programming language is the "best" for android game development in the terms of having the most functionality while having the most simplicity?
C# with Unity
Thank yoh for the suggestion ๐
If you've got a solid web and bot dev foundation I'd definitely recommend picking an engine and looking for a youtube tutorial series on building an FPS game in it. Unity and Godot are both great options. This series is a little old now but Brackeys is one of the best tutorial makers for Unity (and now Godot). I bet they explain everything super well!
In this video we set up our Player and begin moving him around.

What have you been trying to build? How were the tutorials you used?
I think it depends on what you currently know too. For example I've been in Unity for a long time so I'd go with C# and Unity but if you have Android experience with Kotlin it might make more sense to use that instead
<@&1050493473033289778>
Brackeys one
thanks a lot! that sounds perfect, i'll check it out soon :)
huh?
cant enter the game
This isn't really a support server for the games. Probably would be best to google it
i hope this app fix real soon
Yo I'm making a Roblox game any ideas
There is no ideas.
wsp
Is anyone interested in collaborating on a game or helping out with the pre-alpha bug grind?
(LIOS) The Last Island of Survival need some Bugs solved
contact the game maker to report bugs to them. this isn't the place for that
I wish we did more events for game development
What game engine you running?
Discord / Python, making a text based dungeon crawler
oo ok
yeyeye, using Ai for procedual world generation
thats dope id offer to help hut my python is a bit rusty
what language do you mainly use? mine is also rusty but im using Claude Sonnet 4 and coderabbit ๐
ive been working on a game on roblox for the past few months so rn lua is the most predominant in my mind
if you are serious id be happy to chop you out on sales if it took up, got a freemium model, appache 2 license, free starter dungeon then $5 per DLC
i love the idea of roblox but havent explored it much yet
i just like roblox studio bc i like building the 3d models and stuff
but ive been learning how to use blender recently
cool!
blender is great i used to use that but fell through on practice when i moved house
Hey everyone!
Currently been working full time on a hobby project with full ambitions towards publishing a marketable product in the game industry!
About the project! It's a procedurally generated text base action adventure RPG dungeon crawler, inspired by dungeons and dragons and those old school DOS terminal choose your own story games, I've been working on this project for nearly a week now with python and discord as my primary language and platform, I have a website on GitHub and have been using VS Code as my IDE.
Thanks for your time ๐
If you have specific coding questions you can ask for help in #1130600438811590709 but do note that asking for a co-developer/founder is against the server #rules
apologies
need video games in discord :)
like making discord into a video game platform too
games + chatting โค๏ธ
Wait what code dos apps use and how do I make one
You can make a bot in pretty much any programming language you want. Which one(s) do you know?
I only know scratch coding lol but for some resone it can understand lua by just looking at it but can't understand how to place codes stuff together ๐
Lua in rbx ofc
I would recommend learning either Python or JavaScript if you want to get into making Discord bots. Those 2 offer the 2 biggest discord API libraries (discord.py and discord.js)
You can also use Lua to make a bot but it's not as supported by the community
https://libs.advaith.io/ has a big list of many popular libraries
Compares Discord libraries and their support of new API features
I love the background
If you need help just ask
You dont need to ping random people
Anyone wanna build a erlc server?

thanks it is what it is
Hi, does someone have some Ideas for my discord bot
what type bot do u have?
do you want to see
ok
uh idk
Hi Anthony, how's it going.
This playlist is actually very interesting and the fact that it is 8yrs old makes it feel like it was too advance for that time. I recently got my interest in game designing after I completed making my first app, Do you think that things have changed in these 8 years and are there any other new recommendations from you.
Thanks
- Divine Will
I am looking for some assistance. I've just set up my own discord and im starting to build out the channels but I want to make it more interactive. For example I want to have a welcome journey whereby the new visitors have to confirm theyve read the rules and will receive a role for confirming which validates them. Any suggestions? I've got Mee6 and because its a discord for a DayZ server ive got DayZ++ bots in there but neither do this validation well at all
The dither on the white halo is SO good
thank you! it's not that complex, I kind of copied the implementation from a tutorial ๐
it's an option in the shader now
I do think some things have changed since then but the fundamentals will all be the same so maybe a more recent tutorial like this one would cover newer changes to Unity. I think the best way to go though is to search youtube for an fps tutorial and find one that you find easy to follow along with!
I like to copy parts of shaders from shadertoy sometimes as a starting point. Makes it a lot easier to understand what's going on initially
hey, can you help me ?
I have an x86 .exe where a dll runs, in this dll I want to insert rich presence, it has to be in x86 too, but I was not successful
using game sdk and social sdk I couldn't even compile the dll
with discord-rpc I managed to compile, but the activity does not appear on discord

Guys i'm new in the server
1
Thank You : )
I am planning/watching tutorials for the game at the same time. I have few really good ideas, I wish to bring them to life.
P.S - I was just looking at game dev event, I'm excited to see the results.
Same
Evolution of a random Pokรฉmon game engine I made last week
Yet to add music and then events (npcs)
Everything is possible to change on an external json, the sprites, tilemaps, map, create texts and even scripting
But it's still really useless at the current stage XD
Unless you like to suffer to draw maps with numbers on a text file with layers ( o.o)
Nice to meet you, I can do it
hi :D
this chat isn't for recruiting
Oh, sorry
This is looking really great! What's it going to be?
This is so cool to see! I use to build my own map editors for some of my early puzzle games and it was so fun. I love seeing how it's progressed with the animations. What are you planning to do with it?
Thanks! :D
I'm trying to do it so people can create 2D pokรฉmon-like rpg games with a simple game editor, but I won't use it for my own games, because it seems I'm too lazy to finish any game I start :p
Sometimes building tools is more fun than creating the full game! It can be really fulfilling to release them and see them get used
and also very humbling when you see the bugs people run into
I'm trying to make the editor to be limited at the point you can't easily encounter errors
if people decide to edit the json file directly to get more freedom and get any bug, I hope they don't blame me ( o.o)
because I would for sure let some thousands of bugs slide without noticing lol
gonna purchase a google play console account, hope it goes well o.o
Yeah I think a good UI will give the user feedback about the error or even prevent it from happening. Also really great for modding to let users have access to the raw json and do what they want with it
Do they require a purchase now? I remember I signed up for one way back and I think you had to pay like a dollar to make sure you weren't a bot
yea $25
yay could do it
it seems my bank doesn't make me pay extra taxes for international payments when it's related to google development :O
saved around 6โฌ
Good morning ladies and gentlemen ๐ โ๏ธ
this isn't the place for recruiting
Ohh mybad
Thank you, its gonna be a MMORPG, I bought an kit years ago that aids me in the backend and gives me some demo stuff like the level shown I make the character and made it load levels dynamicly and I've been tinkering with the UI and ofcourse with the social sdk, might make it a activity
would be fun to launch a MMORPG directly from discord VCs
totally possible too seeing Unity supports web builds
Edit: not possible due to the framework not liking web builds
but I also put it on steam
already got its app with fees paid
I also want to make a Junkbot activity but I will not use the name Junkbot(lego might get mad they still potentually hold some rights to the name) nor the long name of the HTML5 clone of it(will use the clone if I do this its open source)
I did that before in a project to kinda make an arcade activity but I think making it its own thing is better its really nostagic as lego junkbot was a flash game I adored as a kid but the MMORPG is more of a priority
also the MMORPG is a remake of the game I lost code of
okay maybe it wont load as a activity
That's really cool that there's a starter for it. Does it handle all of the backend and server for you or is there still configuration you need to do?
If you run into specific issues definitely ask in #1219055432232992778 !
I know other Unity devs are building activities using Dissonity so it's definitely possible
Looking for developer who have good experience with faceit i wanna create a faceit standoff 2 server pls dm me

but thats the first time i've seen someone have a security key thing actually work
Really? I've been using them for like 8 years now
Hey yall instead of doing weekly screenshot Saturday threads in here we're going to be using the new #1403120755360796762 forum channel. If you've got anything cool you're working on drop it in here! https://canary.discord.com/channels/613425648685547541/1403147282714722405
Sure, just make a server and moderate it. BOOM! Instant Discord moderator!
Now, if you mean "handles user submitted reports" then you need to apply for a job at the Trust and Safety team.
I'm talking about that
That's the staff badge. And to get it you, uhh, need to be a Discord employee. So again, check the link above on how to get a job
If you're just looking to add badges then you're out of luck, since badge hunting is off-topic for this server
No I was just asking how itโs possible to work at Discord with a new account
Again, to work at Discord you get a job. Account age has literally zero to do with your ability to do whatever job you apply for
Because they probably made a fresh one to be their employee account while their personal one remained private
ok
Anything is possible in this crazy world

Friendly reminder to game devs that the free assets rotate tomorrow from Fab: https://www.fab.com/limited-time-free
I've missed a few months but there's thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands (if you count the Paragon assets they released for free, but I don't) of assets and templates that you can just collect and keep every 2 weeks.
I just did the math, I have $4594.57 worth of assets for free just in the last year alone.
Oh woah this is super useful. I've been buying so many one off 3d models lately
yeah they're so all over the place in general but like a few weeks ago this was released for free: https://www.fab.com/listings/7bac6c72-ba72-4ca2-891e-9b8970dd3277
it's usually like $30 for personal, but I always get the professional license just in case (since both are free)
https://www.fab.com/listings/786d44bb-41fb-446a-b786-560d57edcef4 or like full on maps
We only unlock and use those when we have events or gaming hours here
Oh, alright. Thank you.
How would y'all make melee attacks fun in a turn based game
I'm thinking of letting them target certain areas with some having a higher miss chance than others
@tender sleet did you mean to delete your ping to me?
Saw it this morning but then it disappeared when I just came to respond to it. ๐ค
Anyhow, as for people complaining, I haven't seen much complaining beyond nit picking.
I think it's a necessary "evil". If there were a better way to do it studios would probably already be doing it.
I'm gonna lose it. I lost too much time on this.
guys im bored can someone give me a project to make in python

You should ask in their server or google some guides. This server is for the discord api, and this channel specifically is for game dev.

Any idea when will the results gonna be announcing for game dev event? It was supossed to be in August right?
oh yep, I just saw it was august ! Date not mentioned tho
For the gamedev world championship? We submitted our judging and it sounds like the full announcement will be early September ๐ I'll make an announce as soon as I have a date for you!
i wanna make games and stuff like indie games does anyone know what would be the best software
ts dead
That depnds on you! How familiar are you with programming and what languages are you best in?
I only know Arabic
Anyone know how i can make a nhl25 league website that can track stats, standings, rosters n stuff like that?
Hello boss can i ask u in private someting ?
no
Bruh u are here staff
Imaggine u are discord staff and you dont help peoples like *** WTF ***
not every discord staff is in the support team, and support team doesn't do live chat support, you have to go through the ticket system like everybody else
staff devs do sometimes answer questions and help in the channels on the server, but that's up to them and if it's relevant to what they do / which team they are in
Its persional question not about server not about anyting about here thats why i ask him *** IN PRIVATE ***
well, they don't do DMs with users, so that option isn't available
Ohhh okay thanks for explaining all u the real one ๐ค๐ฝ
if it's not related to development, this server is off topic for that anyway, personal question or not
If you've got questions about game development though, this is the place for it!
My question is just does u got payed for your JOB as Discord Staff
Cuz on my region or anywhere i ddimt se anyone with this icon
And its intresed see someting like this
intressed

Not related to game dev, but the NHL has an API. https://github.com/Zmalski/NHL-API-Reference
also beware they randomly change their api data structures all the time
Ah, that's unfortunate
Does anyone know what coding languages I have to know to create software applications?
Pretty much any.
Your question is very broad.
Wassup Guys
Yes, discord staff are employed by discord so yes, they do get paid
Per hour or a day
What u think
Why cant i say โheyโ ๐ญ
Usually full time permanent, so it's a yearly wage

Most satisfying game mechanic?
Winning
how come its so hard not to rage while building something
like i was building on roblox studio a part flew away from me and i almost threw my mouse at the tv
Fun
(sorry for saying such hard mechanic for todays games)
Smooth, fluid movement imo. Take a look at how the game Celeste does movement, itโs so good.
Am well basically working to create a discord Ai bot for everyone to chat with like chatgpt
Recreating fluid movements from scratch using real life-based equations into a game engine must be a pain, but I guess it's the only way to create fluid movements close to real life ones
real life isn't the goal for game movement in most cases
This is just pain ๐ญ
celeste and similar feel so good because of coyote time, the fact that you do not just plop down if you walk over the edge
Yeah but if you aim for realism like Sea of Thieves did, it's the best
To be honest I like the story and music of Celeste, but the movement feels clunky and so awkward that I stopped playing. Sometimes the arrow keys donโt register, and random letters are used for the controls too. I like games where itโs fun and easy to move across large distances, like Dandara: Trials of Fear, Sable, Hyper Light Drifter, The Pathless.
now while you could do this why would you not just opt for a bunch of noise and get 90 percent of the way there
There are a lot of techniques to create realistic fluid mechanics, I just mentioned the most accurate one (based on real-life mechanics)
I really can't say I agree
realism should not be the goal
ultimately fun should be the goal
hello people
scnx
"If you aim for realism"
Also, realistic water makes the game very fun to play
Isn't that like one of the easiest game engines๐
Might be easiest to get started with, does not mean all projects will be easy

hello
,
been looking into Embedded APP SDK for a bit now, there's 2 things that I am currently missing:
- the ToS/ToC for Embedded APP SDKs (what I can have as an embedded app and what I can't have; what I can add in my embedded app and what I can't-to be exact looking into advertisement here since I am not looking into the monetization section)
- I haven't been able to see anywhere if it's possible to "define" this embedded app sdk to be for a specific server (don't really have an interest in making it public for everyone) so it's somewhat close to a private discord bot that can only be used for my specific server
-# Please mention me when you respond, thank you
@merry vessel
- Check out #6 here https://support-dev.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/8563934450327-Discord-Developer-Policy
- Correct that there is no way to define a specific server for activities. If you only want it to work in a specific server, you could check the guild in your embedded app when someone tries to use it and not allow folks from outside your specific server to use the experience

ah aight, so the same as discord bots apply here, although, I've seen Youtube provide us unrelated advertisement which is why I thought maybe that advertisement related are more lenient and would allow some additional funds flow for the application, especially that the whole Embedded App SDK would be based on those ads (basically with the permission of the user, the application would then be able to run).
if that doesn't really make sense I could explain what I'm attempting to do, and you'd mostly be able to understand through it ig? no clue how else I could explain this
Thank you again btw โค๏ธ
Was anyone at devcom or gamescom this week? Our team was there all week giving talks and we just revealed our new collaboration with NVIDIA, showing off cloud streaming in Discord featuring Fortnite!
how tf are you staff and have only been on discord for a couple months
LMAO
||in case that's a genuine question...I can't tell...many people make second discord accounts when they represent a business on the platform, discord staff included||
Starry is about to find out about staff accounts
oh, right
yh i was being stupid sorry
I wasn't, but I saw a lot of really good things about it, this included!
Ya having privacy is pretty nice...and being able to leave the company without forever being "ex-discord staff" on the platform too
Right lol
Yeah I'm sad I didn't get to go to this one, but I'm heading to SLICE in Seattle next week and it was too much to do both. I've been hearing people say it runs better in Discord than on their own machines
This is likely due to platform optimizations tbf ๐
Trying to make your game run on a relatively wide set of machines versus discord means there's a lot of time to put towards making it playable
I think it would be the case for me, I built my personal machine in 2015
Ok grandpa
but yeah being able to optimize for one platform is really nice
Mine is a 2019 machine tbf, and I have noticed a lot of.... Difficulties
I want fortnite in discord on windows XP and I want it now!
Optimize for that platform pls
I wonder if I could get that working
Anthony you've created a terrible weekend project for me
I hadn't heard of SLICE...I wish I wasn't working that day, or I'd probably stop by, looking at the schedule...those look fun!
Good luck ๐
I mean if Discord works on it then I think it will right since it's just streaming?
Yeah right before PAX West too so it should be a pretty fun week for game devs!
Thank you fellow Anthony

In order to help you, you first need to ask an actionable question. What game engine are you using? What type of game are you making? What pain points are you suffering? What specifically are you having troubles with?
What are you trying to make? We can help you figure things out but this isn't a server meant for recruiting
ye ik am sorry
hey is anyone familiar with creating world gen??
You trynna do terrain generation?
Use layered noise
My PCs currently unplugged so I canโt give you a good example

oh thank you so much
No problem ๐
Hi there - As a reminder, please use this space for commentary and discussions around game development. Thank you!
Another week, another set of free assets from Fab!
Oh fire, thanks for that
I use so much perlin noise in my work. Especially in shaders. Once you start using it I feel like you realize you can do it everywhere
I love perlin noise, I use it for damn near anything at this point
Just a word of advice, when you hear a game developer say no one wants to steal your ideas, thatโs because they are stealing your ideas
Really tru

I just want you all to know I'm not stealing any of your ideas

When I launch my Discord activity, I have this link: https://1345932571887931454.discordsays.com/?instance_id=i-1412314087559270430-pc-1347476679014088714&location_id=pc-1347476679014088714&launch_id=1412314087559270430&referrer_id=undefined&custom_id=undefined&channel_id=1347476679014088714&frame_id=17c33c2e-e39f-46cd-93ed-f5dfe6598a95&platform=desktop.
Do you know why can't the parameters be passed into window.location.search?
Huh?
Are you by chance redirecting? I had the issue originally when I was using a React router and did a redirect to my Discord code with the SDK and it removed all the query parameters. Can you do a console.log(window.location.search) at the root of your site that loads within Discord and verify it shows there?
Yes?
Thanks bro, let me have a try
It seems itโs the redirect issue
So you can either try to capture the params and include them in the redirect... or try not to redirect ๐. I modified my code to avoid a redirect.
Totally gotcha! Let me have a try ๐
What?
Hey how are you

please give me a tutorial on how to get the "staff badge"
get a job at discord...there's no tutorial to get a job
I have a discord channel, can I create a staff badge
what
There probably is lots of tutorials on YouTube
do not trust tutorials on youtube well some of them u can trust and dont be a scrippt kiddy
The Staff Badge is a discord employee identifier.
Whatever tutorial that isnt telling the person to apply for a real job at Discord, is likely malicious.
They said thereโs no tutorial to get a job, thereโs lots of video tutorials on how to get a job, improve resumes etc
fair enough
Discord also has a video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hX9MOVIMYkg&pp so from this video I can see that basically u need to be good at throwing inflatables, yoga, pouring coffee, climbing walls, eating nuggets, collecting toys
Go to https://discord.com/jobs to apply for a job and come body slam Pusheen.

Yeah!! It's really great for prototyping and making small things. I've seen some really beautiful artsy narrative games come out of it

The forest in this pack is so beautiful. It's crazy how many different tree/foliage packs I've bought over the years
If only these existed for slender and the 8 pages.
I do kinda love the psx low poly horror aesthetic though
I was actually never a huge fan of that except if they lean in to the whole VHS or line the 80-90s camcorder style.
The camcorder style hits way different
Reminds me of my child hood a bit
I love a good VHS shader. I work mainly in Unity and this is the best one I've seen/used so far

I keep meaning to ask, what are you building currently? Are you using any of those assets in something?
Nope. I'm not really into game dev these days. More focus on web dev. I used to do more back in like 14, 15. Its always been an interest but never something I could sit down and do. I even have a couple books dedicated to multiplayer game development. A lot of my own projects in web space even have to do it with. Like Glicko2 research with MMR, stat tracking, game data APIs, etc. I even have done coaching for Overwatch before.
I've had ideas for games in the past, but sadly never had the artistic ability or time to really do it.
I just like collecting the assets for that one off thing I may do at random times like wanting to build a random map or something in my free time in unreal.
Lord knows I can draw for the life of me either and you know, design and modeling is a huge part of solo development unless you asset flip
What motivates you to do web dev? Its oversaturated too much boilerplate for nothing and ai is becoming increasingly good at web dev (it can automate crud apps really easily)
I really need help with my app
with what specifically? might be best to make a thread in #1130600438811590709 explaining the problem
go to the dev portal > oauth tab to make a easy link to authorize it with the scopes you need, the instalation tab is where you set the defaults and if it's guild and/or user installable

either! there's a huge overlap in topics/advice/questions between developing games with and for discord (using mechanisms like the socials SDK or activities) and more traditional "regular" game dev

Ok
I used to make all my own art but it's definitely very time consuming. My favorite thing to do recently is grab a large asset pack with consistent art and then modify it if I need to or have time. This pack has been huge for games and prototypes I've made (plus all of his other assets). I love finding people with a reasonably consistent art style on the asset store too in case I need more from them. That way it feels less like a flip and lets you concentrate on what you love
I think AI can automate a bunch of stuff but development is inherently a creative endeavor once you understand the engineering part of it. I don't think it'll ever be able to take that away from us. So just because AI can "do" it doesn't mean it isn't fun still to build and play with ideas
thank you bro
I've tried asking on Discord Town Hall server as well, but no one answered. I've tried pretty much everything, basically. I'm unsure of what to do now and I feel as though this is my last resort.
I've tried appealing the Limited Access through support but it's always a bot that answers me and closes the support ticket immediatelly.
I can't DM my friends, but the FAQ claims I can DM friends I've had added prior to the Limited Access, and it isn't working.
There's also no red bar on the top of my screen that says I'm under Limited Access, but the FAQ says it should appear, when it's not there.
It also says I can't join new servers, but I was just able to join this one. It doesn't make any sense.
So I've been sanctioned and I can't do what it says I'm allowed to do?
discord doesn't do live chat support, nobody here is involved in the handling of these matters. we can not help you in any way here
read the responses you got from support and reply there if needed, this is the wrong place
I understand.
make sure use mod mail instead ping ๐ you can message a bot pretty cool
modmail very cool to use

Sending that to modmail is just a waste of time, we cant do anything with it
Well i did use mod mail yesterday mod use it
pretty neat
I actually have a couple of the Kenney packs! I got them for free or heavily discounted. Love asset packs. I used them heavily in a game jam back in like 2016 at the college I was participating in. Sadly didn't win but we go next. I've done a few little projects here and there though. Nothing to write home about though. I wrote like a basic temple run clone way back in like 2013 for the Android and put it on the play store. I've always had a fascination for horror games though personally so if I did get back into it I would love to dive more into that.
These are the 2 books I have:
- https://www.amazon.com/Development-Deployment-Multiplayer-Online-Games/dp/3903213160
The first is pretty like engine agnostic and focus on the technical aspects and ideas. The second dives into frameworks. I need to finish reading them.
oh online game
You shouldn't be scared of AI, AI is stupid more often than not. I've seen so many mistakes from web devs and even devs in here because of AI. It can complete small tasks or even large ones depending on how popular it is. You have to remember that LLMs are trained off data so if there's 100k todo apps written and maybe only 2 complex business apps written it will be fantastic at writing todo apps but terrible at the other.
Web dev itself is such a massive landscape though. There's backend, front end, database administration, systems administration, UX and UI design, etc. You can design entire websites and how they'll flow in figma and hand it off to a front end dev who specializes in converting those documents to code. Sure there's a lot of boiler plate but that's only dipping your toe into web.
In terms of game development I don't think AI has cracked too deep in it's surface yet besides art assets but that's a whole different conversation that can stir up a lot of feelings from people and probably not the best to talk about haha.
Well aI is ok bot some outdated
I use microsoft colipot thing default window app
Like poketwo help guide example in the colipot outdated
now they use @ poketwo
they don't use command for it
poketwo game bot is ok not bad
you have to guess pokemon name and catch it and level gain
pretty fun
plus you can sell your pokemon for shiny high price with fake coins
Oh i know just let you know ai bot kind of outdated
That why people don't use them
sucks google ai have build in phone now
android
#dev-chat is better suited for that generalized of a conversation.
this is #game-dev-chat
i talking game bot though this is game dev lol

I should really read that first one... Do you recommend it so far? I've done a handful of smaller multiplayer projects but I never fully learned fundamentals of multiplayer game dev, just kinda went for it.
Minecraft
I'm like RIGHT HERE ๐ (my background is in multiplayer games - also happy to chat if people want to talk about it)
lol
I have those books too. It has some solid fundamentals. I think they get really down this reactor path that I don't think is totally neccessary.
Also... there are standard open source tools for generating code (proto/grpc/capn proto, etc)
But still definitely worth the read
I think the biggest knowledge gap for me is what the infrastructure for a real time multiplayer game looks like in general. I've built turn based multiplayer games and APIs from scratch and I've used libraries to handle real time multiplayer functionality but part of me really wants to understand how you'd think about something small like players and collisions for a real time multiplayer game
You should read everything on: https://gafferongames.com/
I haven't read it fully yet. I've gotten through the like first few chapters but it's on my list and I really wanna finish it. So far I feel like it takes a practical approach in terms of setting realistic expectations, challenges, etc. I mean the first chapter is basically like "this crap is hard and can be expensive" lol. It has the expectation that you have some knowledge but still dives into like domain specific language and gives you an understanding. If it was like a couple hundred bucks for the book, probably not...but $30? yeah I'd say it's a solid buy. they also have like pay what you want on their own website for the PDF if I recall.
reactor path? don't know what you mean in that exact context.
whenever I think of it I always remember UDP > TCP for game networking haha. I've never dove too much into it myself, a lot of it is much lower level than I'm comfortable getting into and I don't really have the time to dedicate to learning it even if I want to.
I do wonder if anyone has thought of using QUIC for game networking
it already sounds like a boring book, like why set boring realistic expectations and challenges.
Set an impossible challenge, work on making whatever kind of games you like with what you have, and if it doesnโt look like your vision then try creating it in a different way.
If you're new enough to the scene to not know anything in the book, you need realistic expectations. Impossible challenges are fine, but they're for the people who understand how and why they're impossible because they'll be the ones who solve them.
Even if you were to start implementing stuff today with premade assets and systems you're still having to read documentation of those systems which still set expectations and limits.
Even premade assets have limitations, that may be licensing or theming or ability to customize....or just flat out price. Everything has limits, understanding those limits and setting realistic expectations isn't a jail cell, it's freedom from being stuck on an issue and not understanding why.
If the pre-made assets have limitations then you can use something else or make your own
and if you can't create your own assets then you can't hop into Blender or whatever with the expectation that you'll create some AAA masterpiece as that requires experience and learned skills...which means you'll have to set realistic expectations for yourself. Setting unrealistic expectations just leads to burnout before it's even started.
You can't just open up Unity with some FAB assets and Photon and expect to make some crazy amazing MMO game to rival WoW, you just can't. you can try, but it will fail.
But what you can do is scale that idea down and create a much smaller scale game to create a prototype and as you gain experience replace it with better assets and slowly grow the game and it's scale as you have more time, experience, skill, and potentially funding. :)
ANYONE HERE created minecraft plugin eh?
stop crossposting my god
mb
I know someone that left their boring job and developed a really cool MMO by themselves in Unity. You can learn how to make your own assets as you work on creating a big game. Games people make in small teams and with less resources are always more creative and fun than AAA games anyway
Iโve never played WoW. Sometimes AAA games look like they all use the same assets. See this really cool example made by a small team https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=efg7xf0ZVUw&pp
Resonance. 2025

Resonance is a third-person game developed in UE5 as our graduation project at LISAA Paris, where you follow a young alien as they explore the mysterious ruins of an unknown planet. Our project serves as the intended prologue of this game and took us 8 months to ...
No one ever creates a moving game or movie or anything interesting by setting realistic expectations, setting an unattainable goal or vision can help push a team beyond their perceived limits.
The people in game development who are like, forget about making the game of your dreams are just miserable people stifling creativity.
looks like one of these tech demos engines put out that never become a real thing, wew
(though i think this is more of an exploration RPG, not an MMO, don't see how that'd be massively multiplayer)
This one isnโt the MMO itโs just an example of a small team game that looks better than AAA games visually.
ah i see, yeah that makes more sense, but looks stunning!
but itโs not a difficult achievement to make a game that looks better than AAA when Pokรฉmon Scarlet and Violet exists
The open world is incredibly empty with no variety in content
That demo you posted was a graduation project which means it was a way to demonstrate skills learned through investment of time, energy, and brain power created through reasonable, attainable, and realistic goals set as milestones to a bigger project which led to what you're considering as a "really cool example." You see that as an example to strengthen you're argument, but that's just an example of a project that's clearly broken into chunks that can be done over multiple periods. Even looking at the raw gameplay it's relatively basic as the project relies on looks and high quality effects, models, and animations. It's impressive as a project, but it's not groundbreaking by any means. It's a true testament to their skill though (assuming they started from semi-nothing obviously).
Realistic expectations are how everything is built. Modern day gaming and software is built on the corpses of failed projects that set the bar too high or made unreachable goals. It only hurts the people involved.
Being realistic doesn't stifle creativity, not at all. It just allows the creatives to dedicate more time to the craft to create a better product that they can be proud of.
It's really impressive though: https://louisefretart.itch.io/resonance
Guy xbox gamepass code need visa card
yeah, there certainly was quite a bit of effort put into that, it's noticeable even at a quick glance
it's certainly not a project you could hope to do as your first project as someone with no experience though, at least not in a short period of time and doubly so if alone
this is game dev chat, i'd appreciate if we returned to that topic and left everything else anywhere else
(will clean this mess up in a sec)
that most likely took quite a while from, let's be real, a team of 8 who all likely had a good bit of experience before starting it
oh hell no! not at all, it's absolutely a testiment to their higher learning.
oh wait they actually state it in the video description, apparently it took them 8 months
and it's essentially just an intro to a game, and one that isn't exactly focused on gameplay
yeah, but like...it's still impressive.
yeah, and 8 months isn't some unreasonable timeframe for that especially for a team that small
I wouldn't have been surprised if it had taken a year
It's almost like, and hear me out on this, they broke it up into reasonable, realistic milestones to ensure that it was a project that could be taken from ideation phase to completion within a reasonable timeframe and make it quality.
Walking simulators are my favorite genre
I'm developing a game if I want the community to check it, where can I find it? Thank
it's also like they had years of previous experience from... most likely a number of smaller projects and learning experiences
Yeah, they did.
It's almost like creating a project that's high quality requires time, skill, and experience.
and depending on the scale of the project it might even require more people
and you can't just go for moonshots without any of that.
a lot of games require tens or hundreds of developers for a reason (said reason being time)
ehhh, double edged sword.
more people != higher quality
often it can mean lower
or giving the feeling of very corporate
Or wasting time because they have to communicate between so many different branches
That's not the fault of scale, that's the fault of poor management.
yeah I don't mean that to say that you can't make a high quality game as a solo dev or a really small team, but certainly there are games that could not possibly be made that way
while larger organizations might mean that there's more inefficiency, well, more people still typically means that more work can be done
a studio with a hundred devs can tackle a larger game than a studio with 10, though both could make a great game
you can make a large organization efficient, just requires good management and good foundation
And poor management is also a major factor as well. Big teams can also be a hinderance because the ones in charge of the product are rarely the ones involved in making it.
But being on a small team has its own problems. You are often waiting on other people to finish even minor things. Core fundamental restructures are too daunting and time committing to touch. You have to make sacrifices to refinement just to have a product
There's many exceptions to this but exceptions only prove the rule
my main point here is that some games are simply far too large, i.e. they require far too much work, for a solo dev or a small team to make - you could spend your entire life trying to create some games and not be close to finishing
And how you're team works is important. I'm about to trigger so many enterprise devs but legit AGILE-like workflows are super beneficial to that. Sprints in particular. Screw the poker planning, all the meetings, etc...but breaking up huge features and epics into stories and being able to chip away week by week makes even huge projects, like game dev, incredibly more approachable.
this also applies to other projects, some things simply have to be the result of the work of a lot of people
I'd make the argument that good workflows are essential... but also trying to fit your workflow 1:1 exact to some framework (and especially just doing endless meetings :p) is often very much detrimental
trying to fit into some idea of a good workflow isn't the same as actually having a good workflow
which is why eff off AGILE in it's whole, but sprints are crucial no matter the workflow.
Oh the author of those books has a "reactor" (re-actor? I forget) software architecture pattern he proposes as basically the "one true way", and I took it as far too dogmatic than was neccessary.
oh? I either haven't gotten that far or my lack of experience in the field makes me not understand the downsides of it. What makes it so dogmatic?
I also read the pre-release versions I think - so it may be it was removed, or in a book that wasn't released
-- the pattern itself was fine. It was just presenting as "this is the only way you can solve this problem" -- which IMHO is never actually the case. There's always multiple ways to tackle a problem successfully.
It's all varying tradeoffs.
I am vaguely remembering the term re-actor from somewhere...i might have to go grab the book real quick
Looks like it's a part of volume 2
It's all in volume 2 for sure
That's where I've seen it
Yeah, that's the one. Like I said, it wasn't bad, was more how it was presented.
"Lumberyard" - that's how old the book is
What pattern would you recommend as an alternative?
A bit older, but still modern-ish
haha
Honestly, straight up depends what you are doing. Modern distributed systems patterns are just fine.
What sorta read rate vs write rate do you have? what sort of durability do you need on your data? what sort of protocols or rpc methods does your client engine support?
it depends ๐
Also there are a lot more horizontally scalable data storage options now than their were when that book came out -- and general distributed systems horizontal scaling options too -- so it's all a continuum.
Part of me has wanted to tinker with "serverless game servers" lol. Like I know they exist with AWS GameLift or whatever and PlayFab but I think it would be cool to mess around with developing that orchestration.
Come join the Agones open source project if you want to work on game server orchestration ๐
agones? I feel like I've heard of that before
isn't that google's?
Like horizontal system?
It rings a bell
disclaimer: I founded that project when i was at google, and still work on it in my spare time ๐
Oh yeah then i def know it
it's probably on one of my older lists
I feel like I passed by it many many years ago
or something like it
it's been around.. for ... 8 years now I think ๐

Whats Up?
So I may have been given the opportunity to work with gints zilbalodis the man who made the Oscar winning movie flow, to make a game but I need a dev team
Do any of y'all at least know a good server to find a dev team
For now this Server here mey be an Good Option.
Ok then do you think this is a good channel to be asking
Wait, stop.
Ok thank you
This server is not for recruiting
Please do not mislead people.
For now.
It may be the Best for him to stay here.
Or he could ask some one eles for an Better server.
Its Optionable.
For him.
This server is very good for asking questions, but it's not really a place to find a "dev team". That kinda qualifies as recruiting, which isn't allowed here.
Oh ok thank you for answering my question tho
Thats a better way of saying it thx.
Be very careful with this as it sounds like a scam
I can send a pic of the email if you want proof but he hasn't completely decided if he wants to work with me
definitely a scam
Nah
Anyone can put any name in an email. Big names like that don't randomly email people about work opportunities
They would contact a well known studio to get started on such a project
Especially people with no demonstrable capacity to deliver, as evidenced by you needing to recruit a dev team from...Discord...
Or somrone with a massive well known portfolio
I understand we're y'all are coming from but genuinely can not give anything else to prove it and like I said in the other chat I contacted him he did not contact me
Still sounds like a scam
Yeah I get it
If you wana continue and fall for it, we can't stop you. But don't blame us afterwards, we tried to warn you
Just be sure to not send money in advance, not to provide sensitive financial information, etc.
And if there is any kind of contract: talk to a real, local, lawyer
So you don't get screwed by fine print you didn't understand all implications on
how to talk to a real
A real what?
Does anyone know if itโs discord that causes background videos / music to stop playing in apps or is that an app by app decision? Can we code around it?
hello, one question, can I add on godot engine the discord game sdk?
I am not a game dev so I can't answer that for you. But just heads up, the Game SDK is deprecated in favor of the new Social SDK
probably
btw, fun fact google exists
All it take is around 1 sec of typing + 4 sec of reading title and clicking
and i already found godot official doc saying it supports browser export, so it ill obviously support discord
I haven't read it properly, you can take a took
yes but there's no information about it but thank you!
if go dot games can run in chrome it can probably run in discord too

Why did they contact you specifically? Hope did they find you m
a
I contacted him
How did you find them? Or find a contact address?
Have they replied back to you?

Ok ok
Ask your question. Those who know will help when they can
I found I a free project on YouTube that let me create procedural city in blender. First it was not exporting correctly so I added "realize instance" node then it started exporting mesh correctly but still texture was not exported correctly.
I did some research and I found out I have to bake the texture. But but it still not working. I think did something wrong.

Uhhm I did research
Okay, so it sounds like this is a cold call on your part where you've pitched something but not heard from them?
He did respond and asked me for an example project from my studio but sadly as a new studio I don't have and example project
If that's the case, it's highly unlikely they would want to partner/work with you unfortunately
No dev team with previous work history makes it difficult to take the risk in work with you
Unless you have a really good individual portfolio
Yeah so that's why I've been recruiting people to the studio to work on our first game then I'll ask him later if its successful enough
Any luck on the recruitment side?
I got 2 people so yeah
๐
Hm
I'm working on a short coop puzzle/story based game in discord activities, are there any examples of games like that on discord? I know most people probably wouldnt do that because it has no replayablility but I'm curious if there are any out there
EhmmmโฆVC Games exist
And some more like Wordle
There's a few games with a loose narrative but nothing that is completely story driven
Discord games tend to fit the typical web game, fast to pick up, quick play sessions, either some sort of multiplayer or progression system
This chat is for discussion about developing your own games
scratch is peak
Probably even better now that someone is porting it to retro consoles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WcRLXbgVDg
Wow guys, porting Scratch to the 3DS, Wii, GameCube, Wii U, Switch, PC, PS Vita, and maybe more????? Truly insane times for the Scratch and Homebrew community.
Github repo / download link: https://github.com/ScratchEverywhere/ScratchEverywhere
You can also find it in places like Universal Updater, Homebrew App Store, Open Shop Channel, etc etc
...
None that I know of but I think something like this would be really cool to play through with a friend or partner!
so good, i wonder if scratch can make it to ps4 ps3
Probably, they've got it on enough systems that it's likely to be a relatively straightforward port for someone that's familiar with them
???

Hello everybody, how are y'all doing today
Would this person not have their own dev team for you to join if you had a stellar individual portfolio? I can see any scenario where they would be comfortable with a random guy reaching out saying โhey I got this group of people from discord can we help on your project?โ
Iโll have to agree with the others, this sounds very scammyโฆ this is not typically how these conversations go
I do have a pretty normal explanation but I've already said it several time and I don't feel like saying it again
I read what you said I donโt need you to say it again, Iโm just saying this is very out of the norm
Yeah ig
It's not uncommon for a games company to reach out to an IP holder to pitch a game which is sort of what's being done here by Salty Butter
And Salty Butter was pitching to them so I don't yet see the 'scam'
I've worked at a company where we created a prototype to pitch for an upcoming movie IP and was up against other pitches from games studios
(which is a shame as the prototype looked pretty solid)
It's not uncommon for a games company to reach out to an IP holder to pitch a game which is sort of what's being done here by Salty Butter
Yeah ig
Roblox
made this, shell for spawn is deprecated. anyone know the not-deprecated counterpart?
Maybe I misunderstood. I thought the OP had reached out to a guy that was working on a game and OP just volunteered to help and just wanted to throw a random โdev teamโ together to make it seem more professional
Yeah, there's a bit of history on the thread #game-dev-chat message
I think you should switch to cross-spwan
Unlike built in spawn, cross spawn supports multiplatform, easily
I'm not an expert, and I mean no offense if i'm wrong but this kinda looks AI generated
(The code)

im using child_process which also i think cross-spawn uses.
wdym by this? and how?
nvm, didnt read the docs. thank you.
yeah it uses child_process but, with some layer overhead
i am working on a game
Nice
How can we work a UI
I think I will try to make the best game
That's the spirit
Hi people
Hellow, where do we actually start to learn the development? is it in their docs or is there resources here in the server?
What type of development are you trying to learn? This channel is specifically for game dev
Games :)
There's no real Discord specific docs for game development. Rather you can create games via a web standard using the Activities SDK, or you can use a dedicated game engine (Unity or Unreal for example) and integrate discord with the Social SDK
ah, I thought discord has it's own dependencies for it
thanks, so I can just make a web standard games using anything as long as it's accessible via web?
Do you think using Godot is a good one to start? I never made other games than Roblox, so I'm only familiar with Luau, I heard Godot use a similar language as Python
I am not a game dev so take this with a grain of salt
I don't believe you can make a Discord Activity with Godot. As Activities run using the Embedded App SDK which is a JavaScript SDK for sending RPC calls to and from Discord to interact with your activity and user's client
I do know however that Godot is very beginner friendly so if you want to learn Game Dev, I would start with that
ohh okay
thanks Sam!
I would start with unity because thereโs a lot of tutorials and support and u can use it to make discord activities, thereโs a video on using it for discord too #server-news message
that one was spot on useful, I couldn't find it directly on youtube
I also asked about godot since I watch a video of someone making a web5 game using it long time ago, but I guess they have different architecture
Godot can work but the Godot team doesn't really focus on the web export nearly as much as Unity. There are also plenty of other web focused games engines and libraries
Im making a vr game :D
Ok
good
Im just struggling with some scripts ;-;
what's up?
The maechanics to progress is making it kinda hard
Itโs tricky at first, but once you get the hang of the mechanics, it gets a lot smoother.
Yea but this project uses stuff Ive never worked with before :/
Totally get that โ new tech can be intimidating at first, but youโll pick it up fast.
Im a rlly slow learner ;-;
Doesn't matter. You'll figure it out eventually.
Remember, failure is the best teacher. Don't let it diminish you. Let it teach you
ur major skill?
:)
Yuh
hello, nice to meet u
SPOOKY CASTLE ASSET LETS GOOOO!
More free assets: https://www.fab.com/limited-time-free
the castle is SO cool looking too. That other asset is basically a DBD multiplayer template!
EDIT: I may actually take a look at that multiplayer template and see if I can put the castle in it
oh woah that cathedral looks crazy
RIGHT?!
still just collecting them without knowing how i'll use them
oh interesting it sounds less generic and more like it's all the logic needed for a 1v4 style monster game
I was thinking it was DBD style based on the images provided yeah
imma spoiler them just in case, but it's not bad
been thinking about making a strategy card game
I still haven't played it but know a ton of friends that love it
oooo any idea what you're trying to do with it? Buildathon might be the perfect time to try it
I've been wanting to do that for YEARSSSS. I had an idea for one for the old like acitivty buildathon called "Celestial Legends" but it never went anywhere :(
Yeah I'm such a huge fan of card games but I've found I only like playing them. Too much balancing to create
if yall make one I will playtest it though
I've always wanted to do one because I never fully understood them and I learn best by making lmao
what games do yall work on?
Backrooms
my vr game
Hi guys, what do you advise me as I am a beginner programmer?
Make stuff. Start small and simple.
Can I find a job with my experience only? bro
You can go entry level but its hard to get due to the market being very saturated
You only just started programming (assuming beginner = getting started) so nope
Yeah, I understand that. Iโm still willing to work hard, build projects, and improve my skills to stand out
Finding a job as a junior dev can be pretty challenging. I'd say start applying sooner rather than later and based on feedback (or the application listings you're applying for), work on improving skills that employers are actively hiring for
That or have a connection in the industry and use that to get your foot in the door to an interview
Makes sense. I guess real-world feedback is the best teacher. Iโll give it a try.
You won't get feedback from applications
What experience do you currently have?
Going good for now
How can I have my game be able to fit multiple different screens and stay clean and organized without losing any options or features
Is it a web game? You could program different sizes for UI elements depending on aspect ratios. Or you could have a setting menu where the user can choose their screen size and program different sizes for UI elements and the camera and other things for each setting
Itโs a web app yes but I want to cross for android and. iOS as well
Hi everyone
I'm a skilled developer in both design and development, but I'm facing some challenges.
So I'm looking for a long-term partner.
Could you please help me?
Please send me dm.
What languages are you good in(
Are you good in ill2cpp?
Usually, there's multiple layouts depending on the aspect ratio and device
Rarely can you get a one size fits all unless it's at least all the same screen orientation
IE all portrait
Thank you

i've found that Sebastian Lague's channel is really good for game stuff
his stuff is kinda low level and dealing with a lot of math but it's presented in a somewhat understandable way which is nice
cool
Nice
coding adventures is one of the best series on youtube
This is a factual statement
There should be a Halloween game jam, that could be fun ๐
there should be a halloween buildathon*
They announced a buildathon, I think it was december tho
Announced?
Link if you have pls
It was in the most recent dev updates stage event. I have not seen it in text anywhere
Surely its on youtube
does not look like it is yet, it was only a few days ago
Had a look at message history, nobody mentioned any other details so ig not much out yet
Anyways that exciting, looking forward to another fortnight of buildathon grind ๐
re
They did mention that they want it to be a longer timeframe. I think they were aiming for an entire month instead of 2 weeks.
no sdk support for godot? ๐ฅ
Hi, my valorant streak is almost on 400x, I played the game everyday. But I'm surprised that I opened my discord today and the valorant streak is just 5x, I swear I didn't break any streak. It's a hard-earned streak I hope you understand. I think it's a bug. Kindly take a look into it. It's unfair to those people who played the game everyday and then a bug occurs. I emailed discord support and was told to put the question here
I really cared
Pardon me?
I think support must have misunderstood you then
It has nothing to do with this server, there is absolutely nothing we can do
This server is for app devs ro talk to each other, not discord bugs
I messaged this about them. I'll check their reply. Thank you for your polite response.
The one by lague?
I dont know why but for some reason he sounds like hes always smiling
yes
let's add this simple feature..what could go wrong
oh it appears that everything has gone catastrophically wrong...anyways let's get back to it

hey @finite thunder does this break any rules?
Woah this is such an insane wealth of knowledge. I love that you have gifs/images for everything in there. It makes it super easy to find something interesting. Thanks a ton for sharing and building this
I think in general we want to have people sharing the things they're building in here so some amount of promo is ok as long as it isn't the person's only message and a "Buy my game here's the store page"
ooo
resource collection does not fall under "i promote my product" in my eyes
Thank you! Hope you found something interesting in there ๐
Sent it to my personal account to dig through when I'm done working
@oblique edge quick ask, could you remove the first line? (could be interpreted in ways that we think promo is ok; just to exclude that possibility - this is not promo under that rule)
Done!
perf, ty
Just saw that owlcat games just published something similar: https://owlcat.games/learning
Probably stuff you can grab from there too @oblique edge
Oh yeah. That's been making the rounds, added to my queue of the next batch update ๐
@everyone
Hey guys what it takes to become a game dev?
As a career or as a hobby or as your own studio/company or something else?
As a hobby I wanna explore
There's a few ways. Generally, the way I suggest is to pick GDevelop and make small games and add twists to them
GDevelop has a good set of official tutorials that makes a great starting point
