as for getting back into gg i highly suggest it, ggst is in a pretty good spot balance wise + more ppl playing recently cus new character, so it’s a pretty nice time to hop in again

Hugo from Street Fighter for me. I love grapplers, but Hugo is a level beyond. Most grapplers are large, but Hugo is a GIANT. And his animations portray this so well. His wrestling style isn't showy, but sloppy and brute force meant to get you under his weight. His rush moves are wild, stampeding charges and he manages to make pink look terrifying.
But his story's what adds the icing to the cake. An ex-villain who went bad simply because it was so hard to find any work at his size. And in SF4 when you really got to see his past, you could see how badly he was mistreated. But with the help of someone else who's been misunderstood, he turned his life around and finally found a place he belongs. And that's what really makes him special. This massive, terrifying lug...is just doing his best so he and his friend can be happy.
...Also successfully catching someone with his anti-air Megaton Press super is satisfying beyond words.

hugo is the best!! i’m particularly fond of him in third strike (most cause i’m just rlly biased for that game lol, the art is too good), but basically everything u said is why i like the guy too lol

If I'm being honest, I'm surprised Slayer isn't in Strive yet. But at the same (and I'm curious how YOU feel since you're a big fan of his), I wonder if they don't know what to do with him. In X2, he was so powerful that he pretty much only existed as a 'I'm going to watch and guide people from afar'. It felt so weird seeing him lose to Bedman in the story of Xrd, but they couldn't have him as the 'super powerful background watcher' since That Man took a more active role.

that could very well be the case. judging by past popularity polls and the like, slayer has ALWAYS ranked high, so it’s not like he has a shortage of fans. i’m honestly thinking either him or jam are the next dlc tho, since those are some of the last two big names that i hear ppl wanting from the former games that aren’t in yet
there could be a few ways they deal with his story i feel. since he was finally beaten by bedman, the only guy who could hold a candle to him, maybe he could be on some sort of soul-searching thing in strive, or maybe just looking for another powerful person who could best him. that, or we get a more assassin’s guild-centric storyline, i honestly can’t say. also curious about how he’d react to nagoriyuki, since i’m pretty positive slayer thinks he’s the last vampire alive that he knows about. but that is one thing i haven’t rlly considered when thinking about slayer coming to strive. gameplay (or rather, meta-wise), it could also be something arcsys is worried about. this entire season it’s been the big players from Xrd’s meta coming in (johnny and elphelt both reigning supreme basically, notoriously so), and slayer was also really damn good in that game, so it could be balancing concerns? i’m not sure. great question tho!

Maybe I'm just being an old-head. I liked X2's version of Slayer much more in terms of story. I think giving more spotlight to That Man made him infinitely less interesting. That Man was most fun and intriguing when he was a recluse who was ashamed at what he'd done, trying to avoid the world for his sins. When storylines led to him, it meant something because of just how rare he was.
...And in turn, Slayer had the role of getting to be the mysterious figure who seemed to know everything about everything and appeared from every corner. Both chars had separate and unique places in the story.
Now both chars are less compelling. That Man went from a hyper mysterious shadow to a (weirdly) named character with an eye flower, and Slayer didn't really have a place in Xrd except for getting beaten to show how powerful Bedman is.
All of that to say I think Slayer's a great char who deseves better writing.

I think I would have loved the reversion back to the Doctor Baldhead theme if there was more story behind it. Faust has some serious demons of his past to overcome. He turned into a serial killer because he botched an operation. If they're gonna play with dark themes with Faust, I hope they go into the idea that he might relapse!

i think my favorite parts of his story are when he’s interacting with millia, it’s an interesting dynamic to me, but i can see what you’re getting at lol
yes, he doesn’t have much of a like refined role in xrd’s story, but his personality is rlly just what makes it redeeming for me
albeit my knowledge on gg lore is really rusty so i don’t remember everything, i still am a big fan of slayer in xrd tho, he has his own charm to me :3

You're not wrong that he has his charm. His interactions? Amazing. You're 100% on the money. I just wish he had a better role in the grand canonical story plot.
...But to be fair, I also think that's an issue that Guilty Gear has dealt with since it got rid of its old format of story mode in favor of a long movie. The main chars have a LOT of plot while the side characters sometimes just exist.

oh yeah 100%, the old form was admittedly better, but i think the changing of it was almost inevitable, seeing as it’s a very arcade-y concept i guess? i think xrd really was the turning point in that line of thinking cause they really wanted to flex the new animation work, from how i see it
don’t get me started on how i have yet to watch xrd’s story tho,,,, that’s a herculean task that i do not have time for

Old Guilty Gear's story mode made everyone have their own plot and they all intersected. Everyone had lots of development and time in the sun. And Slayer popped through everyone's routes like the Cheshire Cat. I don't think the new mode was inevitable. I just think it was a bad decision. Guilty Gear X2 managed to do more story with less resources. The fact that it's too long for you to watch (and I don't blame you) is the biggest strike against it for me. You're right. It just...isn't FUN.

A lot more moves to memorize and combos are more reliant on things like knocking your opponent up or bouncing them off the ground. I'd look at some of the movelist videos on youtube, maybe the sample combo things.
...But if you're just a casual sort? Yeah, it's fun. Though Tekken 7 has a sadly lacking amount of single player modes, so online is where it's at.

Personal favorite of mine is King of Fighters XV (15). 2D fighting game just like Guilty Gear and an absolutely MASSIVE roster. Currently 59 characters with more DLC likely on the way. All sorts of fun.

sadly i think i’m also familiar with most of the popular/semi-obscure fighting game titles :( but i do think we need to spread the gospel on this one game i discovered called Hinokakera, there’s a great video by GuileWinQuote (great older fighting game youtuber) that talks about it, it’s like anime fighter mixed with 3d fighter sensibilities and mechanics? idk how i’d describe it. i think a lot of ppl in here who enjoy guilty gear would also appreciate it :3 i can find the link to the video since it goes into it far better than i do but still it’s rlly cool

to be fair, bots in fighting games are cracked when they are set on a high difficulty. They literally know what buttons you're pressing

Zappa gets his name from Frank Zappa, one of the major inspirations of Weird Al. He was a very funny musician, but instead of parodies, he did original and strange pieces with a very funky style. Big fan, so points there. Look up the song 'Joe's Garage' or 'Montana'.
Zappa is a love letter to Japanese horror. He's possessed by a ghost who makes constant The Ring/Grudge references, and follows my favorite guiding principle of Japanese horror. The spirits are extremely strong and it makes no sense, the confusion adds to the horror. There's no 'beating' the spirit, it does what it does and mortals have to deal.
He is also a major Jojo's Bizarre Adventure reference. Like...everything about him. Highly muscular body suit, various articles of his clothing (Pillar men, Vanilla Ice, Dio), and his ghosts are allusions to Stands. The reason he strikes such wild poses isn't just because he's possessed, but because Jojo's is known for that!
But all of that pales in comparison to the reason I adore him. He's like Spiderman, but twisted. Zappa is a normal dude in a world full of weird demi gods. And this guy has been 'blessed' with the power to be able to take on ANY of them. And weirdly enough, his main spirit? S-Ko? She seems to be genuinely protective of him. Zappa is a normal dude who didn't ask for adventure, wants no part of adventure, and yet can (and probably has) put Potemkin through a building while bent into a pretzil upside down.
He's the most creative version of the 'average joe who is suddenly super powerful'.

you’ve convinced me he’s cool, i’m just a slight stickler for lore i guess and it doesn’t really occur to me how he could potentially get in strive seeing as he got unhaunted (i think?) in xrd’s story
which is also why venom (the other character i want in strive so bad it hurts) might not get in as well, he’s basically retired but not in the slayer “sorts retired but not really” way, like he’s settled down and made a shop and stuff

Venom's been a quiet little favorite of mine. I just love the design of a pool hall assassin. He's like what other animes would make as a 'really cool side char who the hero defeats' because his powers are so wacky and niche. And Guilty Gear made him into one of the major heroes. Just 10/10.

big win from the looks of it!! i got to play a little bit of testament due to a glitch (don’t ask how it happened) so this is pretty exciting for me too, but according to the notes, the biggest things are that they get better okizeme off things like throws, their teleport doesn’t get rid of their succubi after grave reaper anymore, and tweaks to their normals
i’m excited personally, besides venom soon i was wanting to buy them and pick them up as a secondary, seeing as recently i’m getting a little discouraged from bridget :(

I'll be very, very honest. I am a HUGE fan of Duck King. I think he's one of the most underrated and fun SNK chars. I'm more than a little angry that they name drop him after not including him for over a decade. If Salvatore is in the game instead of him, I might actually be hesitant to buy.
