Returning player here; are AI cores a whole separate thing or is there a way to turn normal cores into AI cores?

You can turn your purple cores into gold cores using Tesseracts. Number of Tesseracts required depends on hull size.

To unlock the AI mode, you will need a further 1 time payment of 200 Tesseracts or 500 AUR.

Once you've paid the 200 Tess / 500 AUR, you can use the AI on any of your gold cores.
