noob question metalevel

New player here. As far as I understand I can't fit a module if the modules tech level is higher than my tech level, correct? What about modules with meta levels instead of tech levels. Can I just buy them and fit them on any ship? Or do they have different requirements.

Meta levels are just a quick easy way to compare module strength

As it’s not as straight forward as mk5 < mk7 < mk9 when you get to named modules

So the higher meta level = better
