You can donate an item to the merchant and you can give(him, her???) apples, steaks, dragon fruit, and potions. In return you will get more of either luck or discount, depending on the item.

This would work better as a ng+ thing, like there could be a guy at the cave entrance that trades items for coins and coins for raw buffs
