#Shortcuts To Specific Levels

I got the idea from Spelunky for context.

Once I've made it to a specific zone a certain number of times (or with certain resources) let me start a run at that level.

For example, if I make it to the Library with 50 gold, (or deposit that gold over multiple runs) give me the option to start from the Library in the future.

If every run starts at the very beginning, and I have made it to the Library twice, assume I have all but mastered the combat and monsters I may encounter in the first level. Eventually, starting from the very beginning becomes boring, even though what I want to do is learn the monsters and hazards of the level I only recently discovered. i.e. its putting friction between the player and the novel information and challenges they want to engage with.

Then, if the player finishes the game by starting on the last level, give them a different ending or different achievement from someone who has beaten the game by playing from start to finish.

Well part of the challenge is an endurance test.

And I’m saying to leave that in and make it more rewarding as well for the players that want that.

But as I’m learning the game, and I want to practice in the level I haven’t beat yet, having to play the first level for the 20th+ time is just boring. It’s friction between the player and discovery and the skillset they want to learn. Also, starting at a later level with no upgrades is still a huge challenge, and would better equip a player that wants to prepare for a run that goes from start to finish.

it sounds more like you just want a selectable practice floor

I definitely agree with the first floors getting boring after a certain amount of times. Once we have more variation with points of interest, the first floors become a lot more interesting, so it will stay interesting
