So as someone who didn’t get the best upbringing which resulted in a severe lacking in certain basic skills I am asking adults that have a better understanding of things a simple question.

what paperwork do we keep?

Especially since some of the paperwork you get sent is just fluff I’m looking for a comprehensive list of what to keep what to throw away and what to keep for a little bit.

Might help other folks whose parents didn’t care enough to tell them as well.

You are supposed to keep tax information up to 10 years also you are supposed to keep hospital records.

Its also a good idea to keep utility bills for a year (lets you keep track of how much you paid a year ago, and is a record of your bill being paid)

Warranties, including something that proves that you actually bought the item (like a receipt, but be careful, the ink may fade, keep a photocopy)
Contracts (bank accounts, insurances, etc.)
I keep my rent contracts from previous places I rented, in case past landowners try to bother me with something
Your payslips always
I tend to keep bills too
I would advise you to keep a physical copy and a digital copy (preferably not on a server or cloud)

Maybe there is an official website with the recommended duration for each document where you live (Pennsylvania, right?) or maybe a federal website?
I know France has one

Any work on the house, get certificates, invoices and receipts.

General rule of thumb, if it has you social security number on it, keep it. If it can be used as a valid form of ID, keep it. If it's important for someone to know to not accidentally kill you or go against your medical wishes when you are unconscious, keep it.

And tax records I would keep digitally on an SSD or Flash drive for at least 3 years if not the full ten.
