Hello guys 👋

I'm working on a project that has nothing to do with RC drones etc.. I'm working on a remote controlled electric winch to wakeboard alone on the lake (see the picture attached). I was looking for a long range system to control it up to 500m and that's how I found Frsky products.

I have zero experience with RC vehicles so i'm totally lost here. I've been searching on YouTube videos and forums and I didn't find a solution.

So basically the motors of my winch are powered by a VESC control card. It takes PPM input.

So my idea was the following :

I will make a waterproof enclosure with my 3d printer. Inside the enclosure will be the R9M and his external power supply. I would strap this to my arm or helmet.
On the water I will have a waterproof 2.4ghz remote attached to the handlebar (see in the pictures).
The receiver of this remote will be connected to the R9M inside the waterproof enclosure.
500m away will be the R9 Slim+ OTA receiver connected to the PPM input of my winch.

Sound easy right ? But I tried all the connections I possibly could and can't make it work out of the box. So I'm probably missing something.

All the videos I'm finding on internet are how to set up fancy RC controller with the R9M but somehow I don't find videos how to set it with cheap RC controls like the one I have.

I read that the R9 Slim needs to be flashed, do I need some special accessories like the ST-link to make it work ?

If yes what should I do exactly ?

I'm sorry if I sound like a total noob but I'm really lost in the amount of informations I find in a field that is beyond me 🥲

Thanks in advance for you help

Why not use just one RF link, why do you need 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz relay?

And are you sure your ESC works with PPM and not with PWM (std. servo pulse, 1 to 2 ms single pulse length @ca. 50 to 150 Hz)?

Also do note that most FDM type 3D printer prints are NOT waterproof w/o further handling (like painting or heat treatment or acetone steam bath).

If I understood your goal correctly, you want your handle to control the winch, max 500 meters apart, both not very high from ground level.
Why not use ExpressLRS for this - it is open source and likely easier to mod for your purpose. Have a look at:
