I elaborated a bit further on what you were originally doing. Idk if this is the direction you wanted to go. I found the image on google. You can use a multiply layer to darken your shadows and an add glow layer for highlights. Or whatever works for you. You can do Warm shadows and cool highlights or vice versa.
