#Why does the coloured version look so bad?

I’m making two versions of some concept art one for an animatic (the one with just flat colours) and the other version for a finished scene, which I plan on properly rendering. The one with the flat colours looks fine but when i add colour it looks wrong and cluttered compared to the flat colour. This is my first time trying a composition like this where the focal point is so far back and with so many characters so I’m really feeling the skill gap. How do I make the colours look more cohesive?

The red color is making most of your colors blend with it, this makes the dark lines on the sketches more visible and creates an unsure separation between foreground background and middle and the composition is also a bit awkward, since there is such a big space between foreground and background you’d expect the characters in the foreground to be larger, I’d advise you to also get rid of the dark floor (if it’s shadow the red light would make it at least only half visible) and make the table in the front darker to get a form of halo around your the guy in the middle and make him stand out he currently blends into the scene too much to stand out (especially the hair )

Hello! I agree with everything blopfish said, personally when im working on a compo I do several thumbnails using only 3 values (black, white and grey) this allows me to easily distinguish what I want to stand out in my piece. Composition is a really tough thing to master and im not quite there yet but if you have a clear separation in values from the get go, it will make the coloring process easier !

Something like this, I think its good practice 😅 you dont have to do it now that you've started but in future projects keep this in mind :>
