# mystic plinth Im sorry I asked this but Im an absolute dummy in digital arts (just started dab...

Don't apologise! Not many beginners go about it this way, but it is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Firstly you just shade everything grayscale (from the darkest black to the whitest white), and then in the layers, most programs have a layer blend/mode called "Colour", this makes it so that the hue and saturation (colour and colour vibrancy) adds the colour to your image.

I recommend when doing studies in grayscale is to have the study IN grayscale itself, cause it can be difficult to eye what the value is when the colour is distracting. I colour the big shapes first, then down to the smallest shapes. I then added some light reflectivity (dabbed a bit of green and red on the jar, some blue on the sphere, etc) Hue variations really makes it lively!
I merge the layers in the end and just paint the details over it. The details being the highlights, darkening some shadows, etc.

Gave myself 6 minutes each for each medium 1: pencil 2:pen and gray marker 3: oil pastels

On pencil I ran out of time, focusing on little details too soon, pen + marker is pretty good, the oil paster one tho... I HATE ITTTT I haven't used oil pastels in ages though it is one of my favorite mediums

My first time doing a still life practice tho :^

great job!!
I would say it's good complete study, only adding some pointers for u when u study still life in the future!

  • would recommend using bigger brush in some parts, before u start with details. form > details so make sure to have good base before adding details with smaller brush into it
  • check your values during whole process, shadows are darker and that's why your piece doesn't have as much focus as the ref pic
  • that least us to last point - sharper edges. Notice that dark shadows are creating areas with super sharp edges, that also helps with creating focus. Save the soft edges for shading the forms.
I overpainted the apple so u can see better what I mean A_A_thumb
