I’ve never been to art school but I use a method of blocking out shapes on an image to make drawing anatomy or backgrounds easier, it’s something I need to get the anatomy right but I enjoy art which is why I do art. Do you have fun making art? If you do, you’ll get better with time (slowly but surely like any other skill) and art school is a good place to be for improving your art or learning new things. I think if you’re not having fun making art, then that would be a reason to consider a different option so you can find what makes you happiest, but otherwise if it makes your heart happy do what makes your heart happy!

This is what I mean by blocking out shapes for drawing them myself on the paper (credit to Jennifer Paulson for the photo). I usually use this method because I’m still more of a beginner artist and it helps me get the anatomy down a looooot better than eyeballing it
Maybe like you mentioned take some time to create art for yourself outside of school and if you want to advance and continue with art then continue with your schooling for it?
