Week 30 - Skull study

I almost made a mistake thinking the 3rd picture is the actual one, there's nothing to be critiqued for the finished drawing, though I would prefer the cast shadow edges to have that gray ish color but this is just preference.
10/10 for accuracy

I think now that I’m flipping Thu them there are some slight anatomy mistakes… imma see if I can fix them with liqvyfy.. but thank u !!!! Heheh

Actually glad for you for thoroughly observing the skull, are most of the time you spend drawing this carefully thinking about the structure of the skull and also the cast shadows too?.

Eee doing this kinds of study’s for me is kids like Turing of my Brain and just coloring … with is way I messed up on the anatomy of the back of the skull. I shud probably take it more seriously

I think the main thing u should focus on is noticing soft and hard edges in shadow/light transitions, some parts have a bit too hard edges but nothing major, nice job

Waaaaaa soooo cool !!! I love it !!! I messes up on the cast shadow I forgot to only make the top part that tutches the ground dark.. fixsed it later tho

I love seeing the difference ways ppl render the skull !! Gives me ideas on how to better do it

I love that instead of drawing all the details u just like indicated that they are there !! Probably saves a lot of time, and it makes it look so cool

It's done!, though I can't make the cast shadow close to black like it should in the picture.

Also lemme make some tweaks first.

It was very fun, I'm sure that the cast shadow is not tilted the way it should like in the picture, and I kind of messed up the teeth structure.
Lemme know if I should improve on something!, feel free to critique!.

That one is scanned by CamScanner, so I think it would be good for me to share the actual picture of the drawing, how's this?.

Hmm but it's still lighter than the actual reference, well I guess it's the camera quality or that the pencil can't shade way darker than that, either way I'm very proud of this.

I like it very much! Did u use a normal pencil ? Are u able to get a pencil that is softer or get a charcoal pencil ? Woud make the value range mutch larger

I use a various B pencil and HB, and I also have a charcoal pencil (which is in my colored pencil section), though I hadn't think of using a charcoal pencil because I think normal pencil would be enough, also all the normal pencil I use are soft and unfortunately I don't have 10 and 12B pencil.

I don’t know that muth about traditional pencils but if u coud find a way to darken the shadows were they are the darkest they woud make the drawing even better.!contrast edit.

Mm yeah that looks even better, I'm going to use charcoal pencils in future grayscale studies, hopefully that will make my studies better :]

looks great!! the only thing I would adjust is the canvas texture, could be interesting to tone it down a little on the subject so it can pop more from the canvas

I am not sure if I will have enough time to do this. However what should I do if I have never done art before

Hii if you have never done art I would definitely try easier topic at first! skull is pretty hard and you would probably struggle a lot with it! maybe you can check other weeks with simple shapes instead, that might work better for you
once you find your reference -

1. closely look at your reference picture, try to spot if there are lots of straight lines or what is bigger/smaller etc.
2. sketch out the reference, capture general shape first and don't worry about details (it's easy to get lost in details but general shape is much more important)
3. clean up your sketch, compare with the reference picture and spot the differences - are my lines in right angle? does it look like my reference, what is different
   keep in mind that your result probably won't be as clean or accurate as u want but that's the point of learning especially when u are starting! you can clean up your sketch as much as you need but it's fine to keep it as a sketch as well, keep it enjoyable for yourself^^

Thank you! One thing I always want to get better at is how much can I simplify/flatten values or what can be implied with a brushstroke or two. Love John Singer Sargent's paintings for example

1 hour in, I'll add the shadows tomorrow probably since my back is hurting, need me some rest

I think it took a little too long to get to this point though, hope it is accurate enough at least

I noticed I can't focus on the general shape and start right away on drawing details or inner parts of the subject, I wasn't done with even drawing a circle for the head and I had already started to draw the eyes and nose

And the fact that i start free-styling those details without looking at the reference, because I always feel like my drawings are "too empty"

Being aware of those impulses is probably the hardest part so you're already mostly the way there, try to notice when you're doing that when you're drawing and practice staying general-to-specific if that's a goal you have (I still struggle with it myself!)

Like your line work! If you're wanting to give it a little more depth, you can vary both the line thickness and lightness. Thicker, darker lines will seem closer, while thinner, lighter lines will seem further away. I lightened the line on the back of the skull and some of the shadow to show what I mean
