How do I render it like in the reference? I can't specifically render the hair, I don't understand 😭

Ok, so you have the linework down, and the general colors blocked in (mostly). It looks good!
If you want to start the rendering process, you can go about it multiple ways, but I always start with these steps:

  • Find the light source. Where is the light coming from? How will the light hit the object? (In this case, the light is coming from behind home somewhere, so most of him will be in shadow, while the background is lighter.
  • Lay down the base colors. The colors of each area that you’ll build off of later into the rendering process (eg. skin, clothes, hair)
  • You can go about shading multiple ways:
    • Keeping the base layers and adding new, multiply layers to add shadow
    • Adding the modified shadow color onto your base color (remember that shadows tend to be cool-toned)
    • Starting with the shadows and adding the highlights later (which is what I recommend for this, since he’s mostly in shadow already.
  • Once you have the base colors and shadows, add the highlights. Remember where that light source is, and add highlights where the light would reach, keeping in mind the 3D shape of the subject as well.
  • After that, play around with the details until you’re happy with the results!

For the hair, think of it as a bundle of shapes. In this style, it doesn’t really matter the shape of the hair so much as the flow. You want to keep the way you shade and highlight the hair in a consistent flow pattern as what you have drawn out in your line work.
I hope this helps you a little. Everyone’s rendering process will look a little different, so don’t feel like I’m saying this is the only way to render, yknow?
Good luck with your rendering! Let me know if I missed any info, or if anything was unclear :}

Very easy

  • Base color
  • Shadow
    And then you clipmask the shadow layer and then use soft brush to make it like that dark to light or some sort. (Take no skills)
