I didn't do the first 25 weeks

#

Am I gonna fail this class?

#

Nah

#

This is not the school system

#

This is art practice

#

It will help me create comics and graphic novels

#

Failure is an opportunity to grow, not a punishment for poor performance

#

I have my sketch here, but no camera rn

#

I think I succeded

In this first session we'll look at the core ideas of an approach to figure drawing which we will build upon in future sessions, starting with a front pose.

*Note: At 33:40 what I meant to say was latissimus rather than scapula!
Any questions about the process please post below and I'll...

I do a ton of gesture and figure drawing so I challenged myself to turn the model without checking any other references. Holy cow was this a great exercise. It made my brain cry and made me face that I'm infinatly better at copying what I see then actually constructing. I need to keep self-studying value, I'll definatly come back to this project to line and paint it

This is the guide I first drew

You did great! There are artist "tools/tricks" that help you layout your drawing more effectivly. If you draw a perfectly straight line from the top to the bottom of a page you can use a plumb bob to look at your reference (a weight tied to a string). If you put that line through a subject it can help you align your drawing vertically and improve the spacing of your features!

#

using a grid of lines, or atleast a couple of key lines like i used to rotate my drawing, help you catch subtle errors. Droping a straight line from the crest of the collar bone generally helps you sense the movement and weight of a subject

broken vector
#

Oh I see, thanks mate I will try to use key lines from now on
And overlaying like that is also great way to see mistakes!

chrome basalt
#

Glad to help! Its important to check our work! if you overlay the reference over my sketches you'll find all my mistakes, too!

broken vector
chrome basalt
#

EXACTLY! Its important to try our best, and to understand, but we have camera's to make perfect copies. Drawing should reflect the world as humans see it

Nowa, I absolutely adore your painting. The skin is beautiful, your line work is bold and expressive. I love your exaggeration. Goals for sure

I really struggle with perspective 💀🤣

#

I'm rlly new I started like last week so could you give some feedback?

chrome basalt
#

@steady delta @warm stag your new super power just dropped!

#

You can also use a metric ruler (mm) with the same technique and move from the world of drawing to the world of technical drafting.

#

Combine this technique with a plumb line and then all you need is practice!

chrome basalt
#

In the beginning: YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO DRAW. Like, your body doesnt physically know how to move your hand. Your eye doesnt know shapes and values. So, like, the more time you spend on a piece it tends to get worse instead of better. At the start.

Do lots and lots of gesture drawings. Look at a feature (torso) try to "see" the simplest outline you can make of it (think drawing a stick man out of crooked boxes). Circle for the head, dash a line through the circle that would run down the back of the head, spine, and down through a leg, then quickly (sloppily even) and lightly start drawing boxes that fit the shapes you see. Draw boxes and shapes until it's just recognizable and then start over again. Try to do three gestures before you start any drawing for real and you will see quick improvement

Oh, the way you did the first gesture from the reference in the scale series of drawings. You have a line from each hand to the low foot. You used those reference lines in all the rotated positions, too. It looks like they really helped control the perspective

I kinda visualized it like turning a flat plane in perspective (easy) placing three landmark features on the triangle in perspective (easy) and then mapping the body between them.

I like, drew a rotated torso and agonized while eyeballing my features in and checking against my grid lines (hard, feels dumb now)
