ACHeart Welcome to Study groups!! ACHeart
face studies are here, let's practice together

ArtClubAlert WHEN POSTING INTO GALLERIES PLEASE ALWAYS ATTACH ORIGINAL REFERENCE WITH IT

I chose 3d head model to be our first face study material!
The idea behind this reference is to break down face into simple geometric forms so u have easier time to accurately work with face proportions

Since this study will be open for whole 2 weeks, I encourage you to work on more than 1 drawing and practice different angles, details of face or light studies.
I will be posting work sheets as well if you can't open the link yourself so don't worry A_A_cute

ACHeart Feel free to work with any medium, try out new things, just make sure to follow the reference ACHeart

ArtClubClock deadline : <t:1755288000:f>

Link below is whole 3d model where you can move the head model for more reference angles by amazing William Nguyen

technique is up to you, the goal is to learn something about proportions and how light behave on whole face

This took me like a week and half and like 20 layers which is not ideal. Like you said though, I'm just more comfortable with whatever I put down traditionally.

I feel like I'll do less learning the head planes and more digital comfort which I am avoiding ATM

#

notice the direction of the face proportions
the nose is pointing to different direction than cheek, when the 3/4 view doesn't look right, check the cheek position!

midnight falcon
#

That helps ty

muted mango
#

check the measurements
the gap between eyes is about the same size as 1 eye
mouth corners are about the same position as middle of the eye
nose wing position end around the same position as corner of the eye
try to look for more lines like this and check if your proportions work!
ear position(!) notice how upper part of the ear is not glued to the skull from front view and how much they are sticking out of the head from side view. A common mistake is placing the ears too close to the eye in side view

#

values
for value exercise choose 6 values max. that should be enough for u to work with all the planes without over complicating it
fill the whole thing in midtone (bg as well) and after that locate the darkest/lightest tones. make sure to check your values from a far (zoom out) and compare it with your reference picture.

muted mango
#

also feel free to post your work in progress and ask anything A_A_thumb

muted mango
#

if u work in digital u can turn on navigator (windows > navigator in most programs - csp, krita, ps) or check your work from a far - zoom out a lot
once u are able to see your work from a far it's easier to judge your value/proportion choices. Now we can compare them with ref pic but it's very useful for personal works as well

@muted mango I uh my dumbahh decided to use a real face

I will

Do more

#

Probably based on that mode l too

#

It's js a bit confusing but maybe I'm just an idiot

muted mango
#

yeah that's more like portrait study, not face plane study. not a topic for this study

#

I recommend using the 3d model I have posted because it will be too hard rn to figure out face planes from portraits, gotta practice more simple stuff to figure out complicated ones

#

ofc if u want to practice portraits instead go ahead but post here only works that are related to references from the original postEM_pray

#

but maybe im just weird

muted mango
#

yeah you can pause it or use worksheets I've posted

#

also this study is about that for now so if it doesn't work on u, u can definitely work on your personal projects instead

rigid tulip
#

have this aversion to copying in general

cause...

Not anime either though

So like an in between yk

#

Not sure if it's relevant but thought I'd bring this up

It's up to you, you can discuss it further in the #🎨・art-chat instead so this post doesn't get cluttered.

sup can someone give me honest feedback, all faces have something off but im just 15 days in, i wanna practice the thing im the weakest at, please and thanks!!

dapper compass

have you practiced face anatomy and drawing that one face statue guy? it helped me a lot back then :D

solid crescent
#

yeah im sketching guidelines and watching chommang tutorial

scenic furnace
#

colour in shadows

solid crescent
#

but what can i improve to those drawing?

scenic furnace
#

so we know how good you are with form

solid crescent
scenic furnace
#

so...

#

light

#

Just colour in dark spots you think light can't hit

#

and have one light source

dapper compass
#

heres a good example

#

basically each face plane has a different value to it

#

the dark -> light patches for each plane is called a value basically

#

see where your light source is from, then from there block out the shadows!

scenic furnace
#

But the 2nd picture does have issues like inconsistent eye sizes, lack of a cranium, flat nose, and the lack of the vertical jaw line (idk what it's called)

dapper compass
#

hmm yeah the anatomy is a little whack

solid crescent
#

that such a complex shape, i do the circle then the cross to the chin and then use the guidelines for the proportions but yeah im a noob

scenic furnace
#

you'll get the hang of it

solid crescent
dapper compass
#

dont worry!! youll get the hang of it

#

id recommended learning the fundamentals first so it wouldn't be too hard

solid crescent
#

what are they, besides the face anatomy

dapper compass
#

start off by copying images of a cube, then a cylinder, cone then sphere

#

hmm all of my materials i used to study are in vietnamese though

#

i'll take pictures then translate them

scenic furnace
#

some people use perspective boxes to draw heads in angles

#

so you can try that

solid crescent
scenic furnace
#

?

dapper compass

heres one for values

The face plane method is great for exaggerating facial details so go ham y'all

im probably breaking rules

Just a reminder to keep this post related to study from the reference picture included in the post and pinned messages.
If u need help with anything else, use #978708583090892830 channel instead so this one won't get cluttered
