I chose 3d head model to be our first face study material!
The idea behind this reference is to break down face into simple geometric forms so u have easier time to accurately work with face proportions

Since this study will be open for whole 2 weeks, I encourage you to work on more than 1 drawing and practice different angles, details of face or light studies.
I will be posting work sheets as well if you can't open the link yourself so don't worry

Feel free to work with any medium, try out new things, just make sure to follow the reference

both are good , if you have a drawing tab do it digitally if not just go with traditional

there isnt really a big difference between the quality of your art , if you're good in one you're bound to be good in the other , the only upside to digital is that it's more clean and easier to manage , messing up with your line work is also less of a punch in the gut than in traditional

It has a screen on it, and it's 16 inches, I just hate the lines when I draw them

maybe your settings are just wrong , mess with them until you find your comfort zone

or maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it

This took me like a week and half and like 20 layers which is not ideal. Like you said though, I'm just more comfortable with whatever I put down traditionally.

I feel like I'll do less learning the head planes and more digital comfort which I am avoiding ATM

your style aint bad just needs some help , i can give you some drawing tutorials that helped me if you'd like , you got some talent i just think with a bit more basics in mind you'll get better

notice the direction of the face proportions
the nose is pointing to different direction than cheek, when the 3/4 view doesn't look right, check the cheek position!

check the measurements
the gap between eyes is about the same size as 1 eye
mouth corners are about the same position as middle of the eye
nose wing position end around the same position as corner of the eye
try to look for more lines like this and check if your proportions work!
ear position(!) notice how upper part of the ear is not glued to the skull from front view and how much they are sticking out of the head from side view. A common mistake is placing the ears too close to the eye in side view

values
for value exercise choose 6 values max. that should be enough for u to work with all the planes without over complicating it
fill the whole thing in midtone (bg as well) and after that locate the darkest/lightest tones. make sure to check your values from a far (zoom out) and compare it with your reference picture.

if u work in digital u can turn on navigator (windows > navigator in most programs - csp, krita, ps) or check your work from a far - zoom out a lot
once u are able to see your work from a far it's easier to judge your value/proportion choices. Now we can compare them with ref pic but it's very useful for personal works as well

I recommend using the 3d model I have posted because it will be too hard rn to figure out face planes from portraits, gotta practice more simple stuff to figure out complicated ones

3rd done for today, if it is your first study of face planes I recommend starting with simple front view and side view before you jump into more difficult angles

studying art is your own journey u can follow whatever works for u and draw whatever u want as well, don't feel pressured to join the study groups there are plenty of other stuff u can work on

Just colour in dark spots you think light can't hit

and have one light source

heres a good example

basically each face plane has a different value to it

the dark -> light patches for each plane is called a value basically

see where your light source is from, then from there block out the shadows!

But the 2nd picture does have issues like inconsistent eye sizes, lack of a cranium, flat nose, and the lack of the vertical jaw line (idk what it's called)

Ughh Yor I keep succumbing and then using the Liquify tool on my drawing whole the pic is low opacity I can't do this I resort to cheating this is shameful

don't be too hard on yourself, I think u already did a good job with your previous attempts so if u feel like this is way too much for you, focus on some easier practices with more simple shapes instead

nice work!! I would keep an eye on neck proportions + values, u can definitely add some darker values to add more depth

look very good!! eye proportions on front view is a bit off, if u work on more views just keep it in mind for next ones. if not, I would focus on adjusting that + ear proportion on side view
