Week 16 - Wood study

here's my result with timelapse!

** feel free to choose only one wood, no need to draw/paint them all!**

How I started Layer 1 :

• draw overall shape without any details
• don't use soft brush so u don't lose any hard edges

How I started Layer 2 :

• use clipping mask or alfa lock - with alfa lock u won't have separate layer but it will work
• option 3 could be selection tool so feel free to use that instead
• start with big brush strokes to make some color variation and basic shading

Layer 2 adding details :

• use any textured brushed
• I used only charcoal but anything will work
• it's good to combine it with blending brush too so u can work with textures better
• u don't have to draw every detail to make it look like a wood so don't be scared of those textures

yeah u can make a new one to see how u've improved!!:D honestly I might try to redo my results too because it was only quick study but I think I still need to work on my textures too!!

I post study every week with difference reference picture and some tips to help with painting the reference and you can join the study and post here under this post. You can post work in progress too so I or people participating can give more tips how to continue with the study
once I post new study the old one will be closed, but people can still participate (but won't be able to post there, so usually u can post into #🎨・art-chat instead)

nope, all the refs are from pinterest or free ref packs so no worries. Only when u post into gallery channels make sure to include original reference with it!

For wood I just put some color splotches on the base and some lines slightly blured

but idk anymore lol

Something I find very useful is to use the eyedropper on the reference to try to understand how the color wheel behaves.

In this case, you will notice that in fact it stays in a very small area of the color wheel, which is between yellows and reds, with variation of saturation and value, if you relate it to the nature of the object you will understand a lot, the healthier areas of the wood are with a little less desaturated and clear color than the areas of the wood that are already somewhat damaged by moisture, which are the darker and gray areas.

I would like to do this same study but first I will catch up with the previous ones.

I'm for sure going to be trying these. I'm struggling with breaking down complex backgrounds. these studies are going to help me alot

yeah honestly you can still do that in this study! I followed the wood pattern but played with colors a bit more than they are on ref picture

yes! you can check other studies here #1357855209916731392 to see some more results from older studies, we are basically trying to draw the ref picture accurately to learn something about form/texture/colors
just make sure not to trace or over paint the ref pic

Quite wise, one part is understanding how color works in reality and the other is artist interpretation.

I love how for example Yuming Li does her paintings, her interpretation is phenomenal.
