ACHeart Welcome to Study groups!!ACHeart
weekly study challenge to practice art fundamentals

for anyone who wants to join - here's reference!
Try to observe simple shapes, proportions and focus on drawing the reference accurately

ArtClubAlert WHEN POSTING INTO GALLERIES PLEASE ALWAYS ATTACH ORIGINAL REFERENCE WITH IT

general rules: use any technique, any medium and don't trace or over paint the reference!

ArtClubClock this week study ends : <t:1752958800:f>

I will be here to help so feel free to ping me anytime
Have fun! A_A_cute

Reference photo source : Pinterest

you can turn on ping for studies here id:customize

  • start with big shape first, simple shapes will help you to figure out overall shape
  • if you struggle with finding the shape, redline the reference picture before you start and trace the shape in red line
  • check the values, if you need to switch the ref pic to black and white to see values better (I do that all the time, can recommend)
  • there's no need to copy ref 1:1 with every detail, try to study from shadows and how light works on this picture
  • if you use colors, notice color variations and reflected color
#

here's my result A_A_cute
definitely could have done more color variations and focus on some details more
might try it again and post it here later

#

here's timelapse!
pretty much focused on shape first, then added some biggest shadows and started adding details

#

Any thing I need to work on, yor? For next time

#

I did it kinda quickly tho

#

Like 40min

granite gull
#

Would try to experiment more with values, it will give it more depth and u can work better with textures. Overall shape is nice so u can focus more on shading/adding values!

Thanks

I cant figure out how to draw it :C gonna make the Little Rock next

I'll try to refine it later

Can yall do an urban reference next? I have a lot of trouble drawing urban settings at a normal pace.

#

Like a big city and allat

I'll see if I can render it any better

Ty but the water does seem a bit high

There is definitely room for improvement

#

And it seems my texture and shadow shapes need more work

granite gull

I like it!! I would add more values into this area since it is a bit flat. overall it looks greatEM_pray

I've never been so afraid to draw a rock.....
All jokes aside, I'm almost done with last weeks study, I'll post it here when I'm done! Then I'll attempt this.

if it helps you can color pick from reference picture so u can have clearer idea about color choices!

stark elk
#

@granite gull not related to study but is it bad to use color picker while drawing with references?

#

Or search up related colors to what we are drawing

granite gull
# stark elk <@722890762823532614> not related to study but is it bad to use color picker whi...

no it is not bad, I would even recommend it when starting with studies because when u don't really know much about color theory it is super hard to even guess correct colors and it takes some practice to recognize shades of colors and how they interact with each other. for example sometimes u might think that u are using correct shades (especially with grey) but when you color pick you will realize it is actually very low saturated brown instead of flat grey. Good exercise could be trying to guess the shade and then color pick it to fact check yourself while drawing EM_pray ofc it won't help much when u color pick without some effort to understand the colors and why do they work this way, that would be only copying without understanding

stark elk
#

Oh okay. I usually color pick only the main color then try selecting good colors that matches with main one and Im using HSV slider for shades

granite gull
#

yeah there are many ways how to achieve some good color choice skills!

stark elk
#

Thanks for taking your time to explain btw

Would like some feedback on the texture and anything else in general

@granite gull I got an study idea, what about we study on skin a week? Smooth skin, fur, hard skin, armored animal's armor etc.

unreal kiln
#

Also the rock looks softer than it should be :(((

#

I cant get those stupid cracks 💔💔

granite gull
unreal kiln
#

I'm layering them with a low opacity brushe

#

Hm

granite gull
#

yeah I think u can try something with high opacity so your values don't blend with each other that much

unreal kiln
#

Like for a part I used like 3 different values

#

I should scratch that and just use one maybe

granite gull
#

yeah I've started with one color and then added values with hard brush for example

unreal kiln
#

Man ts so hard 💔💔

#

At least my colors aren't that bad

#

I think I'm gonna use a pen brush

#

This fade one ain't ittt

granite gull
#

u are losing the overall shape so u will need to get rid of these lost edges

#

yeah pen brush might work!!

unreal kiln
unreal kiln
#

Dies a bit

indigo geyser
#

nah the brush is the issue

slender locust
unreal kiln
#

I know it looks smooth

#

Idk.

#

I'm gonna fix it later in the week

slender locust
#

It doesn’t matter too much for rocks cuz no matter how u draw it its still a rock

#

But you should still be drawing that rock correctly or else ur dogs or trees will look sped

#

Cuz rocks have jagged turns and edges and u completely left them out

latent granite
#

Sorry about the late post, I've been really tired this week. (Last weeks art study) It's missing some windows on the sides, and the house itself is too tall. Any feedback would be nice.

manic path
# unreal kiln

you put the big rock too far left the small rocks come before the big rocks on the contour
