ACHeart Welcome to Study groups!!ACHeart
weekly study challenge to practice art fundamentals

for anyone who wants to join - here's reference!
Try to observe simple shapes, proportions and focus on drawing the reference accurately

💖 general rules: use any technique, any medium and don't trace or over paint the reference!

this week study ends : <t:1748723400:f>

Photo reference source : Pinterest

I will be here to help so feel free to ping me anytimeA_A_thumb
Have fun!❤️

#

Here's my result with tips!

  • don't get overwhelmed with it, check the silhouette of whole drapery and focus on that shape first
  • once u will the whole shape, focus on biggest shadows
  • notice difference between hard and soft lights/shadows

Self critique : I think I could have used more value variation and focus on more sharper shadows/light. Could have spent more time with it tbh

It's the first try of my life creating a digital art painting and all that stuff I even did it on mobile phone using ibis x paint it's good enough for my first try cause I mostly prefer traditional method I'd love to get your reviews on this one 🙌✨

versed gull
#

there is a lot to improve but, 😄 maybe later this week 😄 nice subject koi!

i will try again later

jovial lodge
#

So i'll try this traditional, i'm a beginner. It's on a white paper though and not sure if I have to properly try to copy the photo or just my own version of it? Should I just start and share where I land?

brisk sundial
#

Just give it a go, you can try multiple times too until you get it right

idle vault
#

wanted to try this too, never went into something else than character sketch, then i may have done lot of errors, taking any help BOTcomfy

@final sorrel thanks for the study group, cuz i felt like just giving up but this made my head respawn and i actually tried to draw

Finally finished the shortcake one but the other one closed already x3

We want this to be a moving class, and there will be longer term study groups in the future too

glossy jacinth
#

I did my best to capture the basic shape of it since i couldn't get past that part on the last one but i have a feeling the proportions are pretty wacky

#

honest question: are studies like this a good use of my time as someone who doesn't really know the basics of how to draw?
like am i jumping the gun throwing myself into this when there's so much low level stuff idk how to do?

final sorrel
glossy jacinth
#

I'm not really sure what the easy stuff is beyond extremely rudimentary stuff like simple shapes and basic lines

wheat peak
#

hiya guys

final sorrel

final sorrel

#

Important at the start is just to copy stuff and have fun. Starting with art theory and fundamentels right at the beginning just bores newer artists

#

My advice would be to just have fun and mess around a lot

#

Art theory can come later

wheat peak
#

@final sorrel what do i improve on my drawing, plz

#

Since you have sanji pfp just draw the whole strawhead crew from one piece

#

Thats not too hard

glossy jacinth
#

I'm not good at gauging difficulty tho
There's been so many things i went into thinking they'd be easy and straightforward only to find myself stumped for days or weeks over the smallest things

wheat peak
#

i fixed the lines and stuff

final sorrel
#

hell yeah

wraith lake
#

took a bit of work for this one
I don't practice fabrics that much A_A_3

Idk If the lighting is correct or not

#

@final sorrel Do you think the lighting I add is too bright or not?

YeyA_A_sobbing

#

I was thinking of making the same as the ref one, but idk how and what the correct color is.

#

So yeah I just use white

#

Since it is easier for me

final sorrel
#

yeah got it, in ref photo the light is slightly warmer but the goal is to try it and learn something from it, not completely copy it EM_pray

half bone
#

First time ever doing something like this, only just recently pick up art again after 5 years so it might look wacky.

Posting my missed studies + current study here
Can I get some general critiques?

whats goood im back with a quick 1.5h study

grand meadow
#

Michaelangelo is that you

glossy jacinth
#

@final sorrel how am i even supposed to continue from this point?
part of what trips me up so much about art is that it's never really obvious to me what should be done next, there's not an obvious progression from step 1 to 2 to 3 you just have to constantly choose what parts you're going to be working on as you go along and i'm just not sure what to do now that i've captured the basic shape

Is this a prank

wheat peak
#

yes

#

holy shit just give sean the definition 😭

glossy jacinth
#

i thought the point of these studies was to help people learn how to draw
why are you surprised people don't know what you're talking about?

wheat peak
grand meadow
#

Sorry I was planning to but I was looking up a picture to support what I was abt to say

#

Hold on

final sorrel
grand meadow
#

@glossy jacinth left is what you did, right is what I meant you could do (fill in the shape with one colour, doesn't have to be that dark) then u can build add or lower yhe value as u wish based on the ref

glossy jacinth
final sorrel

#

because lines don't exist irl

#

think of it like

#

using the different shades to act like lines

final sorrel

Ok i added more to it and i'm pretty sure this is an improvement but also i think i made the little look like a bit of a mess
Idk i need to take a break

Do you want one for the study from this group or for the ones I did on my own or both?

I think not, post it in chat or appropriate art gallery

#

Bit unrelated to this art study:
How do you remove linearts/sketches when your in the painting process?

#

Especially when that lineart size is a bit too big...

final sorrel
gentle skiff
#

How do you achieve hard edges when rending shadows?

#

Mine would sometimes leak out... cause I rely way too much on the smudge tool

final sorrel

final sorrel

But how do you effectively use the free hand mode, cause my god its wobbly for me

final sorrel
gentle skiff
#

Thanks for all the answers mate

tender relic
final sorrel
# gentle skiff Ah csp has it... man i dont think Krita has it

I've checked and it looks like u can't do it
if using lasso tool is too difficult u can cheat a bit and make a new layer > use hard brush of your choice and fill the whole area u would select with lasso > select that area and hide that layer > work on your painting layer again
now u have a bit clearer selecting without wobbly lassoA_A_Matisse

I'm really not sure how well this turned out, i'm pretty abysmal at shading

#

Really shouldn't have needed to spend 3 days on this

Hi, I decided to join, I'm not usually working with colors (I mean I use grayscale) but I want to learn colors too, do y'all think a base color palette like this is going to work for this practice?

#

Also I want to learn to not rush my drawings so wish me luck 😔

glossy jacinth
#

did doing this study actually make me improve as an artist?

Another study down! I feel like I spent a disproportionately long time experimenting with blending on this one. Any tips, or is blending a “just keep messing around until you have a feel for it” kind of thing?

bitter ore
#

I used a transparent brush to build up the shadows on a base colour, then put in some highlights the same way on a new layer, using a transparent brush

#

Base layer of shadow shapes, then adding more depth to them

im done yay

ashen bane
#

Got bored so I'll continue later with the shadowing

bitter ore
#

Don't know if this helps anyone but i'll post my process with layers

  1. sketch
  2. rough shadow under layer 1
  3. background
  4. refined shadows
  5. highlights
    all done
