Here's my result + some useful tips!

• remember the basic shapes practice and notice simple shapes in this reference
• start with simple sketch and don't get overwhelmed with details, it's ok to focus only on cake:D
• the food has some interesting textures so try to study it and experiment (rough vs smooth textures)

I just found out idk how can i add texture. I have only 2 brushes hard and blend and i cant figure out how do people rander with them

Helloo, I think the easiest way how to start is with simple shapes! If you struggle to find them, you can start with practice from week 6 instead and come back for cake later!

i mean that's what i'm trying to do but i just don't think it's coming together well
i tried to identify where i could just do it in simple shapes but it doesn't look anything the reference
if i keep going it'll go off the rails, i'm sure of it

hello, yeah adding texture with hard brushes is pretty hard. you can try to work with bigger areas instead and erase some parts to add it! here's quick example

helloo I hope I understand your question correctly but it's useful to fill the whole area with one color and gradually add darker shades only on areas that needs it. So choose your base color that is as light as the lightest part and then add more shades!

i guess what im more concerned about is like how to not let the sketch marks be visible bc i usually inked the drawing before coloring, but i want it to be more seamless this time, but thank u!

See I can still see the pencil likes and idk what exactly I should do? I’m erasing before tracing it again with colored pencils

pencil marks are annoying as hell lol I would try to sketch with the color of the object to make it more seamless but since u already have to deal with pencil I would try to cover it with darker color shade since u still can go darker in your values!
Also I see your color palette and I would recommend u to add orange into cake's palette too

ahhh okay thank u! im guessing the orange is going to be the shadow of the cream or maybe some part of the shadowed part of the cake? (also tysm for responding so thoughtfully ;-;)

it is not mandatory to post them so if you want to take it seriously but need different deadline, feel free to work on them in time that is suitable for u!! I am adding new one each week but some people are starting with week 1 today and it's totally ok the deadline is more for post closing, not for anyone who wants to join!:)

i feel like its worth doing the basic shapes first though for sure. also even if it takes more than a week for one drawing, i feel like thats okay because drawing and learning isnt really set on a certain timeline (ik ur not asking me but im also new and had to go back to try the other weeks so..)

@grizzled cove hii u can add texture with some textured brushed like charcoal, dry brush or maybe sponge! krita has some options but yeah, u can experiment as much as u want:D

yeah the cream has questionable shape xd in my process I've tried to keep one big shape and then when in with darker values to create more blops

the common reason for dull colors is this!
1st sphere has shading that doesn't change in hue and just adding black into original (base color).
2nd sphere is using hue change (going from yellow to orange for shadows) and also we can notice that there is different direction for choosing colors (the arrows in color triangle that creates more variation in saturation!). (saturation - how 'pure' the color is. low saturation - color that has added white or black in it - the color is washed out by it, high saturation - vivd color that has no washing out from black or white)
to keep it simple - we tend to add black into shadows and that's why the colors are dull and not as lively!

@thick kernel hey i went back to the week 6 study like you encouraged me to do, i've done 3 of the 4 images posted and i hate to say it but i don't think i'm any better prepared to draw the cake
if it's still not feasible for me, then what should i do?

I like it! now I've realized u have asked for textures in traditional!!:D with pencil it will be harder than choosing different brush xD but we can create different textures in trad by blending/not blending each area. for example for cream u would need more blending bcs the texture is smooth. for cake u can try to add some dots and grain to it bcs the texture is much more rough

hii, I think the best thing would be to found out what's the thing that holds u back and work on that. is it line quality? try to practice straight lines etc etc. I really encourage to do self study as well so try to think about the thing u need to improve before u will draw more complicated works, watch some yt videos, read some book!

for digital I think this process looks pretty well, just focusing on bigger shapes first and gradually adding stuff to it! I've already sent some textured krita brushes above!

i don't want to just object to everything you're saying but i'm not sure there any resources that can help me at my skill level
like the videos i have found, it feels like they're targeting people who're already significantly better than me
i remember when i tried to figure out how to draw clothing folds, the video i found didn't feel like it was made for people who're learning how to draw but instead for people who already have a good feel for art just trying to cover a blindspot in their abilities if it makes sense so i just ended up being more confused

Ooh tyy. I have a follow up question of that’s ok. When shading other colors is the shadow always warmer or does it just move in the same direction on the color wheel. Like for example when shading blue are the shadows more green or purple? Or does it depend on the light source?

hiii I think it looks great!! the cream is a bit flat on some parts but it doesn't take away from overall great look! for more depth u could have added more overlapping between strawberry and the cream in this part but I would leave it as it is 💯

tried my take on in, I changed the lighting schenario a bit but I just personally love the way that all of the components lead back to the focal point. I know its just desert and strawberries, but it makes you appreciate composition !!

the simple shapes are not only in things visible in refs. U are right that the narrow end of the cake is triangle but if we want to think in shapes we can break it down even more and say that the whole cake is triangle shaped right?
u are looking for too little shapes I need u to focus on big ones, u can even avoid cream and strawberries and focus on cake only!

How do you begin to picture the parts of an image that're obscured by other elements?
Like how can you just tell the dimensions of what's behind the cream and stuff?

well everything is somehow simple shape, look around u. the apple is basically sphere, your phone is basically a block, mug is cylinder. that's why it's important to know the 3d shapes to look for them. u can practice it everywhere by looking at objects around u

Sorry but that's not what i asked
I never stopped to think what it would look like without the cream and stuff present so i felt obligated to draw it and that didn't give me a proper frame of reference for how much space it's supposed to take up so trying to draw it really messed it up
How do you just know what it's supposed to look like without that stuff present?
How do you learn to see more than what the reference shows?

You have to understand the 3d shape (kind of like xray vision) to help u do this u can practise drawing shapes like the 2nd image

u can even draw into reference to see where is the line going right? u can see it's straight line that has to continue somewhere.
as I said, practice it with everyday objects

if u are still unsure I would suggest u to still focus on simple shapes 19 showed above before u draw the cake. Focus on cubes, cylinder and such and after u master them, move to complicated stuff. U will have to draw more of them than what is shown in other week posts so look up your own pictures too. practice straight simple lines as well to be confident with your lines

most things i've stuck with are things i'm naturally good at so i've never really learned how to practice
how often should you practice, for how long, and what point can you tell it's actually starting to pay off?
like i'm sure it's important i've just never really gone anywhere with it

depends on your time but it should be more than 10 mins a day I would say. around 1-2 hours would be ideal but it's not always possible to reach that, but the key is to stay consistent with it (so on some days it can be 10min, on other u might be able to draw for 1 hour). I would start with the straight lines as a warm up so focus on long straight lines and fill the whole page with them, u can make a 2 dots and try to connect them with straight line as well
for simple shapes u can choose any of them, cylinders are harder so go with cubes first. draw them with references so u are able to check the accuracy instead of guessing it. try to draw at least 3 a day but if u have more time, do as much as u want. As I said, consistency is the most important part.

Aiit I’m pretty late but honestly this is one of the worst pieces I’ve ever done, and I’ve done some pretty mid work. I just can’t think of many redeemable qualities. I couldn’t get any depth on the cream nor could I get the textures right. Like this was really poor for me and I didn’t even start off that badly

I really don’t know how to blend colours, like I understand colours but don’t understand the technique and whether it should be wet or dry before you mix acrylics

The only good things I can rate here are the strawberries and the idea
