Here's mine with some tips :

  • start simple, block out big shapes first
  • remember that it is not copying but studying, try to find logic behind lights/shadows and don't just blindly copy!
  • if you are not confident with colors yet you can try to study lines or values only, no need to do full colored pieceA_A_thumb
  • it's good to constructively self critique your work after u finish and keep it in mind for future works!
for example I could have paid more attention to details and some parts are way too dark

Hi I'm just making sure but I can post my study here , for it to be critiqued, right?

about an hour. 6x4.25 inches, limited palette (sap green, crimson, ultramarine blue, yellow, white)
shading can be better and the shapes are a bit off. it was fun tho!

I just started learning watercolor and I'm no expert or anything with still life (or art in general) so I don't really know what I'm doing that's why I'm here learning. And before I knew it I went overboard with the color and stuff. But yeah, this is my take on this. Don't have watercolor paper but I think this gouache paper does the job.

sure!!
for the mushroom's stem I would choose a bit darker values. the ref photo had almost the same values for gills and stem so I understand why u chose them but for painting it would be better to make the depth clearer and differentiate them from each other more!
for still life I would recommend u to focus on clean edges of each object in the future, the final result will look more realistic and cleaner!! if you work with sketch and then move to painting, u can keep the sketch under your painting layer and after u block it out turn off the sketch layer completely, or if you work without sketch choose big hard brush with hard edge to block out objects! alternative solution could be using lasso as well

As I said earlier : The main point of weekly studies is to try new topics, stay consistent and finish said work. Each week have different ref and I believe everyone can find something to study in each week either it's line quality, colors, values, etc. There was also landscape practice week without using references if that's the main issue of this all. We are preparing more study materials which will make more complicated studies easier to grasp and it will be possible to look up more resources to study from. Also I would like to add that study group is not meant to be replacement for art school or art courses and I am not responsible for anyone's 'evolving', this is place where u should work on your own and I strongly encourage self-study as well. But also I understand the feedback and I will work on explaining things better and making some more informative posts in the futureEM_pray

i think you are doing a great job Yor. after all still life is the basic of all art academy, you cant make a good illustration without a good understanding of the actual world. even if one want to make a fantasy world, it has to contain some logic that apply to the real world for the audience to connect. i believe a good fantasy is one that make so much sense to the point you wonder if it actually exist. so keep up the still life, or sketch from life practices. i find your study help a lot. (btw English is not my first language so dont come at me for the wrong grammar or something.) 👍 A_A_3

Hello, thank you so much ❤️
yeah, the idea behind studying from references and drawing simple shapes and still lifes is from my own classes at school (instead of photos we use live models or objects) and I think it impoved my work a lot overtime. Drawing what you see it very effective way of starting to think in 3d space and when you practice it with logic in mind you can learn a lot. As you said many people don't want to draw shapes and still lifes but it is pivotal to know these before building your own characters or world so hopefully more people realize that and start to draw boxes✨ Also this is something you would do for first years of any art school - learning basics.
But as I said I understand the feedback and I am preparing some new things to work on covering figure drawing and basic construction of it! Also in weekly ref studies we will definitely move to more difficult things but I will keep movement to new topics gradual EM_pray ACHeart

hii nice job!!
for rendering tips : It's great that you've blocked out the shapes first!! Next step would be using big brush and blocking out the biggest shadows (if you are familiar with layers and clipping masks you can use it for each object too). Keep in mind that everything can be broke down into simple shapes! Reflection is pretty hard study so I think if would be good to focus on simple shapes at first and then think about the form and how is it reflecting light.
if you want to practice it more you can look up some simple shapes to study!
Also I would recommend you to work on straight long lines to build your line confidence!
