Ok so first off it is looking like to me you were just trying to copy the lines rather than look for structure. Additionally a lot of his features are way out of proportion. You have his eyed bring way smaller, cheeks bigger, etc

Ok yes. So both of these came from Line by line draw alongs, and you make me wonder if I can leverage some structure knowledge along with a Line by line and create something more proportionally accurate. Any suggestions in how I could prevent the proportions being so off in the sketch phase?

Compare side by side the proportions. If something looks too wide then correct it there. Its much easier to make changes in the sketch phase than when you have basically all the lines done
