im unsure on when to start building a portfolio, what to put in it, and what to study on for it, im still early in g10, but nothing going on right now, finished big exams, just a minor one around the corner, and summer break really near, though after that i think it'll be harder to build it since im applying for 8 IGCSE subjects which i also gotta study on, im thinking of taking a gap year or a few months off after graduation

Don't be bothered with a portfolio at the moment.

You are fairly early in art education to be bothered with the weight of a decent portfolio. In fact a portfolio is more or less a method to showcase your talent to the recruiter, therefore it should be considered last, when all other things come along (skill, education, experience, career goals).

For future advice, your portfolio should be best suited for your desired job, so the content you provide in your portfolio depends on the particular detail of the job. As mentioned, this requires you to have a clear career choice as well as the skill needed to perform the work.

An art portfolio is not somewhere you would post every work you have done. Different jobs need different portfolios.

To add to what bandit said the one time outside of getting hired where a portfolio is helpful/required is when you are trying to get into a specific art department in college where you need to get through an approval in order to actually be getting the respective degree. And in those cases they usually have classes you can take where first off get better at art and second are able to create your portfolio. So believe me its not necessary for you to try and make that rn. Youre still in highschool and definitely will improve before you even have to think about that sort of thing

i'm not sure of the grade system, or what stage you are at, but if you're looking to get into art college you should start the portfolio at least a year in advance. give yourself plenty of time. BUT don't start too far in advance (2-3+ years) because your skills will improve massively and your art will be different by the time you're submitting it. and like ciborg gal said, make sure it's focused on what you're applying for, select only your best works and be decisive.
